2012లో నేను, పుస్తకం, నా పుస్తకాలు

గత సంవత్సరం పుస్తకం.నెట్‌తోనూ, పుస్తకాలతోనూ నా అనుబంధం కొద్దిగా ఒడిదుడుకులతోనే సాగింది. వారం వారం పరిచయాలు వ్రాయటానికి కొన్ని ఇబ్బందులు ఎదురైనా అక్టోబరువరకూ వ్రాస్తూ వచ్చానుగానీ నవంబరునుంచి అనేకకారణాల వల్ల సమయం దొరకటం కష్టంగా ఉంది. నా కోడి, కుంపటి లేకపోయినా పుస్తకం ప్రపంచంలో మామూలుగానే తెల్లవారుతూ ఉంది కాబట్టి పెద్దగా ఇబ్బంది, హడావుడి పడటం లేదు గానీ, రాయటం లేదన్న అపరాధభావం లోపల్లోపల కొద్దిగా పీకులాడుతూనే ఉంది. ఐనా కుదరటం లేదు. పరిచయం చేద్దాం అనుకొంటున్న పుస్తకాల సంఖ్య మాత్రం పెరిగిపోతూనే ఉంది. (వెనక్కి తిరిగి చూసుకొంటే 2012లో నేను వ్రాసిన పరిచయాలు/ వ్యాసాల సంఖ్య 36. సంవత్సర ప్రారంభంలో నేను ఉద్దేశించింది నెలకు మూడు పరిచయాలు వ్రాద్దామని. ఆ లెక్కన నేననుకొన్నన్ని వ్రాశానన్న మాటే. కాకపోతే కొద్దిగా తొందరపడ్డానన్న మాట 🙂

2012 ప్రారంభంలో ఇండియా పర్యటనలో కొన్న పుస్తకాలలో ఎందుచేతోగాని జీవిత చరిత్రలు కొద్దిగా ఎక్కువగానే చేరాయి (ఎందుచేతో కాదులే, ఆత్మకథల పట్ల నాకు కొద్దిగా పక్షపాత మెక్కువ కాబట్టీ – ఈ మధ్య చాలా ఆత్మకథలు ప్రచురించబడ్డాయి కాబట్టీనూ). నేను ఈ సంవత్సరం పుస్తకంలో చేసిన పరిచయాల్లో కూడా చాలా ఆత్మకథలు ఉన్నాయి. 2012 విజయవాడ పుస్తకమహోత్సవంలోనూ, ఒంగోలు, హైదరాబాదు పర్యటనల్లోనూ పుస్తకాలు బాగానే చేరాయి. శ్రీయుతులు దేవినేని మధుసూదనరావు, సి.వి. సుబ్బారావు, పూర్ణిమ, నవీన్, సాకం నాగరాజ, కోట పురుషోత్తం, నవోదయా రామ్మోహనరావు వంటి మిత్రులు చాలా పుస్తకాలు అందించారు. అన్నీ నాతో తెచ్చుకోలేకపోతే, ఫేస్‌బుక్‌లో పరిచయమైన యువమిత్రుఢు చక్రవర్తిగారు చాలా వ్యయప్రయాసలకోర్చి కొన్ని పుస్తకాలు తెచ్చిపెట్టారు. వీరందరికీ సభాముఖంగా నా కృతజ్ఞతలు. ఈ సంవత్సరం కినిగెలో తెలుగు పుస్తకాలు చదవటం మొదలుబెట్టాను. నిర్జనవారధి పుస్తకాన్ని వెంటనే చదవాలని కోరిక పుట్టటం దీనికి ప్రేరణ. ఐప్యాడ్‌మీద కినిగె తెలుగు పుస్తకాలు చదువుకోవటానికి అనువుగానే ఉన్నాయి.

పుస్తకాల లిస్టు కొంత వరకూ జాగ్రత్తగానే వ్రాశాను కాని, తరువాత కుదరలేదు. జ్ఞాపకమున్నంతవరకూ జాబితా ఇస్తున్నాను. పూర్వంలాగానే తెలుగు పుస్తకాలగురించి, ఇప్పటికే పరిచయం చేసిన ఇంగ్లీషు పుస్తకాల గురించి వివరణలు ఇవ్వటం లేదు. *గుర్తు ఉన్నవి ఇంతకు ముందే పరిచయం చేసిన పుస్తకాలు.

5 Can’t Is Not An Option – Nikki Haley

Nikki Haley nee Randhawa, descendant of Punjabi immigrants to US, is the Republican Governor of South Carolina. This autobiography is largely a political biography focusing more on her improbable initial win in her run to be a state representative, humiliation in the South Carolina House by the speaker and his cronies for fighting for transparency in legislative voting and her subsequent successful run for the Governor job. Very little here of her own background, growth and development.

6 A Voice In The Box – My Life In Radio – Bob Edwards

I used to wake up listening on the alarm-radio to Bob Edwards, the anchorman for the National Public Radio Morning News program. This is his biography with some interesting anecdotes and a recounting of his bitter parting from NPR. Bob Edwards now has a show on Satellite Radio and is on my local public radio on Sundays.

7 Rather Outspoken – Dan Rather

I used to get my evening news from Dan Rather on CBS News (he succeeded Walter Cronkite during my first year in US). This is his biography with some interesting anecdotes and a recounting of his bitter parting from CBS. Dan Rather also now has a show on Satellite Radio.

8 Washington Burning – Les Standiford

A very interesting book about how Washington, the Federal City was built, later burnt by British, and rebuilt. The political personalities, the architect that shaped the city and its two famous buildings – the White House and Capitol. Amazed at the documentation available about these events. Once again I lament about how we have difficulty reconstructing what happened in our land even 50 years ago.

9 Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo – Ted Lawson

After the Pearl Harbor, America decided to show Japan what it can do and carried out a daring mission of bombing over Tokyo. Ted Lawson was one of the participants in that air raid. His plane crashed while he was returning and he ended up in China under Japanese occupation. He was helped by the Chinese underground resistance before being able to return to US.

10 Amelia Earhart – Kathleen Winters

When I first took the Weschler Intelligence Test, one of the questions on it to test the fund of knowledge was, Who was Amelia Earhart? This is the story of the pioneering woman pilot with many accomplishments who mysteriously disappeared in the Pacific Ocean. The author actually paints a slightly negative portrait.

11 The Fires: How a Computer Formula, Big Ideas, and the Best of Intentions Burned Down New York City – and Determined the Future of Cities – Joe Flood

A Fascinating read. The New York City Fire Department decided in the 1960s to take the help of the scientific analysis and management of the Whiz Kids from the RAND Corporation to streamline and modernize its department. Joe Flood argues that the well meaning actions of these analysts was responsible for eventual decline of the city, the fires in Bronx in the 1970s and the destruction of vast sections of the city. He mixes history, sociology and biographies as he leads us thru the events. We learn quite a bit about urban planning, fire fighting, power brokers and grand visions.

12 Dreamland – David K Randall

A very interesting book about the science of sleep and dreams. From my professional perspective, it is written rather for the layman.

13 Indian Food – A Historical Companion – K.T. Achaya

Got interested in this book after reading about it in Pustakam. When I asked Purnima to help get it from Flipkart, she generously gifted it to me. As I tried to read it during traveling in India, I had a little difficulty in finishing it.

Then she meets with a terrible accident and gives up riding. After her marriage fails, she returns to her parents’ horse farm with her teenage daughter to confront life and mortality. Interesting characters and situations with a little mystery thrown in. Good reads.

26 Leela’s Book – Alice Albinia.

An interesting book takes the motifs of Ganesha, Vedavyasa and Leela through the ages and then sets them up in modern Delhi and its tumultuous mix of social, religious and political tensions.

27 American Dervish – Akhtar Ayad.

A tale of a young Muslim boy of Pakistani parents growing up in Wisconsin with his atheist, alcoholic, philanderous and brilliantly successful father, his sensitive mother, and an aunt – really his mother’s friend Mina, a recent immigrant divorcee from Pakistan living with them. It is at once a novel about coming of age, about religion and fundamentalism, and, more importantly, the role of a woman in a patriarchal society. Well written.

28 Calico Joe – John Grisham

Grisham’s recent book is about two baseball players: Joe Castle, young, talented and gifted hitter on the raise and Warren Tracey a pitcher, alcoholic and abusive and on his way down. Tracey’s beanball seriously injures Joe Castle and ends his career. Tracey’s son, Paul was a fan of Joe Castle and watches in horror as his hero is injured. Thirty years later, he seeks out and meets Joe Castle. Later, he arranges for Joe Castle to meet Warren Tracey, who is on his death bed. As always with Grisham, an interesting read.

29 Lunatics – Dave Barry and Alan Zweibel

Essentially a slap-stick comedy novel. Made me laugh. (I have been a Dave Barry fan for decades)

30 Albert Nobbs – George Moore

A novella by George Moore about a woman who spends her life masquerading as a man all her life, employed as a waiter in a hotel on the verge of financial ruin. Made into a film couple of years ago and got Glenn Close an Oscar nomination.

31 Mr and Mrs Smith – Cathy Dubowski

A married couple in love live in a suburban home. Unknown to each other, they are employed as professional assassins working for different groups. They both get new assignments where their targets are – each other. This was made into a film starring Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie sometime back.
