2019లో నా పుస్తక పఠనం

2019లో నా పుస్తక పఠనం చాలా సార్లు చాలా మందకొడిగానూ, కొన్నిసార్లు అతివేగంగానూ జరిగింది. కారణాంతరాల వల్ల కొన్ని పుస్తకాలు చదవటం మధ్యలో ఆపేయవలసి వచ్చింది. మళ్ళీ వెనక్కు వెళ్ళి  వాటిని పూర్తి చేసే అవకాశం దొరకలేదు. ఆ పుస్తకాలను ఈ జాబితాలో చేర్చలేదు. వెనక్కు తిరిగి చూసుకుంటే ఈ సంవత్సరం కాల్పనిక సాహిత్యం కన్నా, యథార్థ జీవితానికి, చరిత్రకు సంబంధించిన పుస్తకాలకు ప్రాధాన్యతను ఇచ్చినట్లు కనిపిస్తుంది. వీటిలో గాఢంగా ముద్ర వేసిన కొన్ని పుస్తకాలను పుస్తకం.నెట్‌లో పరిచయం చేద్దామని అనుకున్నా, చేయలేకపోయినందుకు కించిత్తు విచారంగా ఉంది. చాలాకాలం క్రితం చదివిన కొన్ని పుస్తకాలు (AJ Cronin’s The Citadel; What then, Raman? వంటివి) మళ్ళీ చదువుకోవటం చాలా ఆనందాన్ని ఇచ్చింది. 14 నెలల్లో నాలుగు సార్లు ఇండియా రావటంతో చాలా తెలుగు పుస్తకాలు చేరాయి. చదవవలసిన పుస్తకాలు చాలా కనిపిస్తున్నాయి. ఎప్పటిలానే ఈ సంవత్సరం కూడా చాలామంది మిత్రులు పుస్తకాలు సూచించి, అందించి, పంపించి సహకరించారు. వారందరికీ – ప్రత్యేకించి శ్రీశ్రీ ప్రింటర్స్ విశ్వేశ్వరరావు, వాసిరెడ్డి నవీన్, మంచిపుస్తకం సురేష్, అనల్ప బలరాం, పల్లవీ పబ్లికేషన్స్ వెంకటనారాయణ, ప్రిజం బుక్స్ రవీంద్రనాధ్, అన్వీషికి వెంకట్ శిద్దారెడ్డి, విశాలాంధ్ర పబ్లికేషన్స్ మనోహర్, మిత్రుడు శ్రీనివాస్ ప్రసాద్ గార్లకు – హృదయపూర్వక కృతజ్ఞతలు. దాదాపు పాతికేళ్ళ నుంచి నాకోసం ప్రత్యేకంగా పత్రికలను, పుస్తకాలను సేకరించి పంపుతున్న మిత్రులు, సహృదయులు, నవోదయ రామమోహనరావు గారి మరణం ఈ సంవత్సరం నాకు మిగిల్చిన విషాదాలలో ఒకటి.

Short Stories

The Best American Mystery Stories 2017 – (Ed: John Sandford); this series has now become one of my favorite must reads every year. The quality of the stories, in both content and style, is excellent

The Best American Mystery Stories 2018 – (Ed: Louise Penny); As above.

Voting at Fosterganj – Ruskin Bond; I bought a bunch of Ruskin Bond books at the Bombay airport as they were on sale for half price; this is a collection of interesting autobiographical short stories, mostly from Mussorie.

Owls in the Family – Ruskin Bond; Another set of whimsical autobiographical short stories

The Great Retreat – Compiled by Ruskin Bond. Short fiction from late 1800s and early 1900s; interesting collection of short stories of adventure and fantasy.

The Unicorn Expedition, and other fantastic tales of India – Satyajit Ray; Ray could have had a great career just as a writer; these are interesting stories, in the science fiction genre, he wrote for a children’s magazine that his father founded and he revived.

Here I Am and other stories – P. Satyavathi; English translations of many stories by one of my favorite Telugu writers. I read all these stories in Telugu earlier but still marvel at her craft and insights. Most of the translations were done very well by the various translators, but the quality is uneven.

 

Novels

What Then, Raman? – Shirley Arora. I read a Telugu translation of this book in my preteen years and many aspects of it remained in my memories. When I wondered on Facebook if anybody remembered such a book, Dr. J.K. Mohana Rao remembered a Kannada movie, Betteda Hoovu, that had a similar story; checking about the movie in Wikipedia let me know that it was a Kannada book, Pinneyo Rama, was the one I was looking for, and that there was an English version of the book, What Then, Raman?, a Charles W. Follett Award-winning children’s book. The book was available at the second-hand bookseller, Abe books. The story was mostly as I remembered it, but is more detailed; it is a very well written book with memorable and believable characters. This book was where I first learned about orchid flowers, and I am reminded of it every time I look at orchids. A special bonus was the great illustration work by Hans Guggenheim – he captured in vivid detail the rural India of the book; unfortunately, I could not get more information about him. The Kannada movie, available on Youtube, is worth a watch. Puru Rajkumar got a National Best Child Actor award for that movie. This book is available with an alternative title, Tiger on the Mountain.

Fahrenheit 451 – Ray Bradbury; Revisited Bradbury’s iconic tale of a dystopian future where books are banned and burned, and booklovers are killed. A classic

Jane Eyre – Charlotte Bronte (abbreviated version); one of the first English books I read during my school days; won it as a prize in some competition; found it during my recent trips home. An old classic that is being made into a movie now (again); and was the basis for many Telugu movies (e.g. Pantulamma).

The Crooked Hinge – John Dickson Carr; Found it in the classic mysteries section of the library; I remember reading a few books by Carr in my medical college days and enjoying them. This one was from the 1930s, had a very clever and interesting setup, and a nice denouement. A little ponderous in style.

The Citadel – AJ Cronin; This was the favorite medical novel for generations of medical students before me until Arthur Hailey’s Final Diagnosis replaced it for my generation. This one was also a find during my trip home; this 1954 edition was passed on to me by an older physician cousin, who, alas, is nomore. This novel, which was adapted as Vijay Anand’s hit film, Tere Mere Sapne (Dev Anand and Mumtaz; great music, see the movie if you are interested in films from the 70s), was about an idealistic and brilliant young physician losing his moorings as he pursues money before finding his core again. Read this book many times during my medical college days. Extremely well written. Was an influence on my development of professional values and identity. Still a pleasure to read it after all these years.

The Captain and the Glory – Dave Eggers; A satire about Trump; passable.

The Festival of Insignificance – A novel – Milan Kundera (Trans: Linda Asher): A short novel about four friends in Paris, making an existentialist point. A quirky tale with interesting turns and anecdotes. There is quite a bit of navel gazing in this novel.

The Satan Bug – Alistair Maclean; another book from my college days; was a film too; this is where I first learned about the botulinus toxin. Good mystery thriller with all the Alistair Maclean trademarks.

Of Love and Other Demons – Gabriel Garcia Marquez; Marquez expands on a Colombian legend of a girl who died young. An interesting tale that unfolds slowly taking interesting turns.

The 18^th Abduction – James Patterson; A passable thriller where two plots conveniently merge together.

 

History

The Patient Assassin –  Anita Anand; This is the story of Jallianwala Bagh, the General (Reginald Dyer) that carried out the massacre, and the Governor General of Punjab (Michael O’Dwyer) who caused it, and Udham Singh who made it his life’s mission to kill the Governor General and avenge the massacre. The book is thoroughly researched and written in a very engaging manner. Anita Anand’s relentless pursuit to trace the circuitous path of Udham Singh and document it is exemplary. The author’s grandfather was at the Bagh that morning but left to take care of some errands; he escaped the massacre only to live with the burden of the survivor’s guilt. This was not however, the main focus of the book. Highly recommended.

The Anarchy – William Dalrymple; Another historical book that I highly recommend. Dalrymple traces the history of East India Company, and how this for-profit-corporation came to ‘own’ the entire Indian peninsula in a span of 40 years, and how the local warlords, kings, nabobs and emperors let that happen. A fascinating read. Well researched. Highly recommended if interested in the times and history.

 

Biographies / Contemporary Accounts

The Twice-born: Life and Death on the Ganges  – AatishTaseer; I read this before Tasheer got into news for having his OCI card rescinded. Taseer is the son of a Pakistani governor assassinated for his secular politics and Tavleen Singh, a right wing Indian commentator; he was born in London, grew up in India and ended up in US. He spent a long time in Benares, meeting with many spiritual people, trying to understand the ethos of Hinduism, the mystique of Benares and the tension at the edge of the ancient culture meeting modernity. An engaging book about Taseer’s quest and understanding.

The Polyester Prince – Hamish McDonald. A detailed account of how Dhirubhai Ambani built the Reliance Empire, and the many short-cuts and possibly illegal and unethical actions the company took on its way to top.

Poorna – Aparna Thota; An account of the amazing conquest of the Everest by a 13 year old tribal girl from Andhra Pradesh, Purna Malawath. It is just mind-boggling to imagine that such a young girl from an impoverished rural background that never climbed a rock earlier in her life, goes from her first experience in rock climbing to conquering the highest mountain peak on the earth in a span of six and a half months, becoming the youngest woman ever to scale the Mt. Everest. There is also another boy, Anand Kumar Sadhanapalli, from the AP Social Welfare residential schools. that conquered the Everest the same day. Praveen Prakash, the IPS officer, then Secretary of  AP Social Welfare Residential Schools also comes off as a hero as do the many coaches. Aparna Thota does a great job in her maiden published work in English; she is empathic to her protagonist, and takes the readers through the perilous experience expertly. A truly inspirational story. Go Swaeroes!

The Race of My Life – Milkha Singh; An interesting journey of a boy who fled Pakistan during partition losing most of his family, and became one of the fastest men on earth.

A Life Less Ordinary – Baby Halder (Trans: Urvashi Bhutalia); A very interesting first-person account of a poor woman from a small village in Bengal that becomes a domestic in Delhi and eventually learns to read and write and writes her remarkable story. Baby’s mother left her when she was young. Her abusive father got her married at age 12; she become a mother of three while struggling in an abusive marriage. She runs off to Delhi, hoping for a better future for her children. However, as a domestic, she continues to get abused by her employers. Finally, she ends up in the home of Professor Prabodh Kumar (incidentally, a grandson of Premchand), who encourages her to learn to read, and to write her own story. Her story, originally in Bengali, was translated into Hindi, and then into English. Life sometimes is stranger and grimmer than fiction.

The Cobra Dancer – K.J. Rao, a biography – Devipriya; KJ Rao was a Chief Election Commissioner of Telugu origin, known for holding accountable elections in a very hostile and violent Bihar.

Alcatraz # 1259 – William G. Baker; Autobiography of Baker, an inmate of Alcatraz; interesting account of the daily life in the notorious federal prison. Baker was autographing the books when we visited Alcatraz in May.

This, That & Everything – IYR Krishna Rao; A collection of columns by the former Chief Secretary of AP. Not particularly impressive.

Navyandhra: My Journey – IYR Krishna Rao; IYRKR was the first Chief Secretary of AP after bifurcation; he later became the first Chairperson of AP Brahmin Corporation. He later resigned from the position because of some differences with the Chief Minister. Some very interesting historical information on the division of assets during the bifurcation.

NTR, A Biography – K. Chandrahaas, K. Lakshminarayana; A well researched and well written detailed biography of NTR. Not particularly hagiographic, but sympathetic to its protagonist. I particularly enjoyed reading about the political journey of NTR as many of the details given in the book are not known to me. A Telugu version (not a translation) is also now available.

 

Other

Indian Test Cricket: A Statistical Digest 1932 – 1974 – Vijayan Bala; another find at home; This was the first compendium of statistics available to us cricket nuts during my college days. It was the book to go to resolve many of our passionate disputes in those days.
