2013 – నేను చదువుకున్న పుస్తకాలు

గత సంవత్సరం (2013) లో నా పుస్తకపఠనం కొద్దిగా ఆటుపోట్లతో సాగింది. సంవత్సరం మొదటి ఎనిమిది రోజులు విజయవాడ పుస్తకప్రదర్శన ప్రాంగణంలోనే గడిపినా, చదువుదామనుకొన్న పుస్తకాలు చాలా దొరికినా, వివిధ కారణాల వల్ల పుస్తకాలేవీ చదవటం కుదరలేదు. హైదరాబాదులో విమానం ఎక్కిన తరువాత కాని మొదటి పుస్తకం (నవ్విపోదురుగాక నాకేటి సిగ్గు) చదవడానికి కుదరలేదు. తర్వాత కొన్ని నెలలు (ముఖ్యంగా ఏప్రిల్ నెలలో) చదువు చురుగ్గానే సాగింది. కానీ అక్టోబరు, నవంబరు నెలలు రెండిట్లోనూ కలసి, ఎనిమిది పుస్తకాలు మాత్రమే చదవగలిగాను. మళ్ళీ డిశంబరు మామూలుగానే ఉంది. మొత్తానికి ఈ సంవత్సరం మంచి పుస్తకాలు చాలానే చదవగలిగాను. చాలాకాలం తర్వాత ఈ దేశంలో ఒక భాగమిది, శతాబ్ది సూరీడు నవలలు తిరిగి చదవగలగటం ఆనందాన్ని కలిగించింది. జనవరిలో తెచ్చుకొన్న పుస్తకాలు ఇంకా చదవనివి చాలానే ఉన్నాయి.

ఈ సంవత్సరం పుస్తకం.నెట్‌లో రాయదలచుకున్నన్ని పరిచయాలు రాయలేదన్న అసంతృప్తి మాత్రం బాగా ఉంది. సంవత్సరం మొత్తమ్మీద 20 వ్యాసాలు మాత్రమే రాయగలిగాను. అందులో 8 వ్యాసాలు సంవత్సరం మొదటి పదివారాలలో వ్రాసినవి. జూన్ – డిశంబర్ల మధ్య ఏడు నెలల కాలంలో ఐదు వ్యాసాలు మాత్రమే వ్రాయగలిగాను. పరిచయం చేద్దామనుకున్న పుస్తకాలైతే చాలానే ఉన్నాయి. వ్రాసే సమయం మిగుల్చుకోవడమే కష్టమవుతూంది.

A talent agent, impresario, film producer, studio owner and raconteur, Jerry Weintraub, tells stories about himself, his clients and his friends including Elvis and Sinatra.

4. No Easy Day: The autobiography of a Navy Seal – Mark Owen.
The Navy Seal that shot Osama Bin Laden tells his life story and the climactic adventure. An interesting account.

5. When the Mob Ran Vegas — Steve Fischer.
Amusing and interesting anecdotes about the early days of Vegas and the many mafiosi and other colorful characters that built the casino industry – includes anecdotes about Bugsy Siegel, the Havana Mafia Conference, Frank Sinatra, Howard Hughes, etc.

6. Undergrounds: The Story of Coffee; where it began, how it spread, how the fortunes of a continent depended on its price, the politics etc. – Marc Pendergrast.
Very interesting, though a huge tome; the definitive book about coffee.

7. The Haymarket Square tragedy – Michael Burgan.
A Brief account of the events and the characters at the Haymarket Square on that fateful day, and the origin of the May Day tradition. As a Chicagoan, I visit the Haymarket Square Memorial regularly when we take guests with leftist persuasions on a city tour.

8. Travels with Puff: a gentle game of life and death – Richard Bach; photos by Dan Nickens.
Bach, who inspired me in my late teens with his Jonathan Livingston Seagull, writes about the new seaplane that he bought and traveled from Florida to Seattle with Dan Nickens, a geologist and sea plane enthusiast. Some nice photographs; a mildly interesting account; the planes get anthropomorphed and philosophical nuggets abound.

9. My Stroke of Insight – Jill Bolte Taylor.
A brain scientist and National Alliance for Mentally Ill (NAMI) activist experiences a cerebral hemorrhage with the bursting of an AV malformation at the age of 37 and recovers to tell a tale. Her description of the progression of her loss of function as the hemorrhage spreads and the aftermath is interesting. The book gets a little preachy with new age philosophy during the later parts. 10. I Too Had a Dream – PJ Kurien.
A smart young man reluctantly becomes a manager of a small cooperative diary in the early days of independence and transforms the diary, and later revolutionizes milk production and distribution in India. A remarkable story of vision, determination and courage in the face of bureaucratic obstructionism, corruption, and opposition from multinational companies. Interesting anecdotes about Patel, Nehru, Sastri, Morarji Desai and others.

Balz, one of the principal correspondents of Washington Post that covered the 2012 Presidential elctions, narrates his perspective of the unfolding of the events.

14. The End of Night: Searching for natural darkness in an age of artificial light — Paul Bogard.
As more and more of the world is electrified, much of the earth has lost the darkness. Yes, there are people who study this phenomenon.

15. *One Summer – America, 1927 – Bill Bryson.

16. Who Discovered America? The Untold History of the Peopling of the Americas – Gavine Menzies and Ian Hudson.
Menzies has a theory that the Chinese were the first people that populated the Americas and marshals evidence from different perspectives to support his theory.

17. The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie – Alan Bradley, the first of the Flavia de Luce mysteries. A teen-age girl a busybody with an avid interest in chemistry, living in a country home is the heroine. OK to read

19. Bridget Jones’s Diary – Helen Fielding. A single, employed British young woman keeps a diary for one year, starting with her goals for the new year. Interesting social satire. Liked it.

20. Books, Lie, and Sinker – Jenn McKinley. A Library Lovers Mystery series book featuring a librarian as the heroine, set in a New England coastal town. Nothing special.

29. Crashed – Timothy Hallinan. A thriller featuring a very erudite professional burglar, Junior Bender, and a former child TV star, Thistle Downing; Interesting.
30. The Fame Thief – Timothy Hallinan; another Junior Bender mystery; a few bright spots; but meandering, very contrived, and unsatisfying.

31. Some Like It Hot – K. J. Larsen.
Three sisters, who grew up on Nancy Drew, together are writing a series of mysteries under this pseudonym with Catherine (Cat) Deluca as the private detective from a family of cops in the Bridgeport area of Chicago. OK.

32. Deadly Harvest – Michael Stanley.
A mystery set in Botswana. Deputy Superintendent Kubu solves a mystery involving politicians, witchdoctors and the practice of Muti; very interesting, mostly because of the unfamiliar setting and cultural practices.

33. Mad River Road – Joy Fielding.
A sociopathic murderer seduces and kidnaps a young woman while he is trying to find his ex-wife and kill her. I once lived not too far from a Mad River Road (in Dayton suburbia), and that actually was the setting for the climactic scenes of this novel. OK.

34. The House of God – Samuel Shem.
Life as an intern in a busy Boston hospital in the 70s. The pervasive negativity made it a very difficult read.

35. Mount Misery – Samuel Shem.
A psychiatrist, under a pseudonym, writes a novel about the experiences of a first year resident at an elite Boston psychiatric hospital. A depressing novel without much redemption.

36. Three Men in a Boat – Jerome K Jerome.
A venerated classic; more anecdotal and a travelogue than a plot based narrative; funny at times; dragging at other times and disjointed all the time.

37. Revenge Wears Prada – Lauren Weisberger.
Not as interesting as its predecessor. Stretches a thin plot with too many sideshows.

38. *Samskara: U.R. Anantha Murthy (Tr: A. K. Ramanujan)

39. Revolution 2020 – Chetan Bhagat.
A novel with love, jealousy, passion and sacrifice with engineering entrance exams and the education racket forming the background. Good read.

40. Others of My Kind – James Sallis.
A disturbing novel about a woman who was kidnapped and abused as a child and is now asked to help a child in a similar situation.

41. Detroit Shuffle – D.E. Johnson.
Another thriller set in the early 20th century Detroit; much like his earlier novel, The Detroit Electric Scheme. A bit too long and meandering. Only reason I continued with it was because of the historical tidbits thrown in.

42. Sugar Pop Moon – John Florio.
A mystery featuring Jersey Leo, an albino bartender in New York during the prohibition era. Plot seemed stretched a bit too far. The backstory of the main character was interesting.

Short stories

43. Nine Lives – Ruth Prawer Jhabwala.
Nine short stories by Jhabwala referred, to as being possibly autobiographical. These stories mostly feature young women – daughters of Eastern European immigrants escaping from Nazis and living in London or New York; the young women are in unusual relationships with men exuding charm or power and many of them come to India for spiritual upliftment or for graduate studies. Jhabwala’s husband Cyrus’s sketches adorn the book.

44. The Jungle Book – Rudyard Kipling; an old classic.

Plays

45. Kiss of the Spider Woman – Manuel Puig.
A two character play set in Argentina; a homosexual is put in the same cell as a revolutionary; he is narrating a movie he saw. This was famous both as a play and as a film.

46. Under a Mantle of Stars – Manuel Puig.
A couple are worried about their adopted daughter when a jewel thief couple come and take refuge in their house under false pretenses. Things get complicated as both mother and daughter fancy the visiting male to be their erstwhile lover.

47. Mystery of Rose Bouquet – Manuel Puig.
An elderly, haughty depressed rich woman is in a hospital and a private nurse is taking care of her. The writer cleverly explores their past and their current motivations in a two character play.

48. The Importance of Being Ernest – Oscar Wilde.
A classic farce and a satire; familiar to Telugu movie buffs as the source for the film, అష్టా-చెమ్మా

Mickey Taulor, my mentor, goes on a rant about the current state of affairs in psychiatry; Mickey, in his element, can be devastatingly biting and very funny.

54. The Cinema of George Lucas – Marcus Hearn.
A definitive book about the cinemas and technological innovations of George Lucas, starting from his days as a film student. Forget the movies, Lucas was instrumental in improving our enjoyment of movies through his many contributions to the visual and the auditory experiences by pushing the technological boundaries.

55. Picasso and Chicago – Stephanie D’Alessandro.
A documentation of exhibitions and other important events in Chicago that had to do with Picasso, including several paintings by Picasso and drawings for his sculpture for the Chicago City Plaza.
