నేనూ, పుస్తకాలూ, రెండువేల పద్దెనిమిదీ …

ఈ ఏడాది నానా కారణాల వల్ల పుస్తకాలు పెద్దగా చదివినట్టు, చదవడానికి కుదిరినట్టు అనిపించకపోయినా, ఇప్పుడు లెక్కలు చూసుకుంటే పర్వాలేదనే అనిపిస్తోంది. గత కొన్నిఏళ్ళతో పోలిస్తే ఈ ఏడాది తెలుగు పుస్తకాలు కాస్త ఎక్కువ చదివినట్టున్నాను. ముఖ్యంగా ఈ ఏడాది రెండు భాషల్లోనూ చాలామంది కొత్తరచయితల (నాకు కొత్త) పరిచయం అయింది. దాదాపు అందరూ నచ్చారు కూడాను. అది నాకు సంతృప్తి కలిగించిన విషయం. మొదటిసారి western lives మీద పుస్తకాలు చదివాను. ఇంకా చదవాల్సినవి చాలా ఉన్నాయనీ తెలిసింది. ఎప్పటిలాగే చదవాలనుకుని చదవలేకపోయినవీ, చదువుతూ మధ్యలోనే ఆగిపోయినవీ కూడా చాలానే ఉన్నాయి. ఎప్పటికైనా అవన్నీ పూర్తిచెయ్యాలన్న ఆశ ఉంది.

ఇంగ్లీష్ నవలలు / కథలు :

1. Be Safe, Love Mom: A Military Mom’s Stories of Courage, Comfort, and Surviving Life on the Home Front – Elaine Lowry Brye: This is one of the best books I have read in 2018, which touched me on personal front. My thoughts on this book are here.

2. Man Tiger – Eka Kurniawan: The story about an Indonesian boy who had a white tigress concealed in him. A nice read with intensive storytelling and characters. Listed for Man booker prize 2016.

3. Brokeback mountain-Story to Screenplay – Annie Proulx: A heart breaking story of two cowboys in Wyoming, came together as their loneliness drove them closer, which haunted them till the end. The story behind the story, the journey from the story to movie, screenplay of the movie put together by the author and the screenplay writers. The movie was directed by Ang Lee. A very good read in the year. An introduction to this book is here.

4. Close Range: Wyoming Stories – Annie Proulx: A short story collection set in Wyoming, tells the stories of ranch cowboys and people, their loneliness, desperation. Each of the story is unique and touching, I was very surprised at the ease the writer used some fierce ranch vocabulary, despite being a woman. That shows her understanding and involvement in her characters. The best story collection I have read so far on ranch/western lives.

5. Milk and Honey – Rupi Kaur: There was lot of hype about this book couple of years ago. I was utterly disappointed with this.

6. No Good Men Among the Living: America, the Taliban, and the War through Afghan Eyes – Anand Gopal: The journalist Anand Gopal’s investigation on the truth behind the America’s war on terror. Tells through the three Afghans, the reasons behind the prolonged war and its true victims and winners. A very stunning read for the people like me with meager knowledge of politics and current affairs.

7. An American Tragedy – Theodore Dreiser: I don’t know how I landed with this 1925’s book, but what a story it is! True classic. Long one with more than 900 pages, but the characters and the lives keep up involved.

8. Men We Reaped – Jesmyn Ward: A memoir in which the writer remembers how the African American youth being haunted by Drugs, Poverty and Racism. She recollects how her brother and four cousins lost their lives at young age. Its another good book I read in this year and haunted me for long time. An introduction to this book is here.

9. Salvage the Bones – Jesmyn Ward: Story of an African American family of four motherless children and a drunkard father. Story spans 12 days during hurricane Katrina, tells us how this family bonds, sacrifices and protects each other during the tragedy. A beautiful and heartwarming story. Won the National Book Award in 2011.

10. Sing Unburied Sing – Jesmyn Ward: This is another book by this author won National Book Award in 2017. Set in Mississippi, the story of a drug addicted mother and her young son who becomes caretaker of his baby sister. Drugs and racism filled past haunts them in the form of two ghosts.

11. There Was a Country: A Memoir – Chinua Achebe: Writer’s personal experience and observations during the Nigerian civil war (Biafran War), accounts the fall of a new nation. Last year I have read ‘Half of a Yellow Sun’ on the same subject, which is a fiction based on the same war. Both the books together gave me a complete picture of that historic event.

12. No Longer at Ease (The African Trilogy, #2) – Chinua Achebe: The story of an Igbo young man studies in England and returns to Nigeria for a job. He is torn between the African and Western Cultures and lifestyles. African Trilogy Book #2, the only one left unread from this collection, since few years. Another great book from this author.

13. Kinder Than Solitude – Yiyun Li: A mystery novel about how the lives of 3 people have changed, after the murder of their friend, in their teenage in Beijing. It might have been committed by one of them. They move to America and get along with their lives. Will the buried past leave them with solitude? I came to know about this writer from a story on New York Times and looks like I found another good writer to follow.

14. Am I Alone Here?: Notes on Living to Read and Reading to Live – Peter Orner: This is my kind of book, and another best book I have read this year and connected to. Peter reads anytime, anywhere just like I do. He says “stories, both my own and those I’ve taken to heart, make up whoever it is that I’ve become”. These are the essays about reading, writing, and living. Writer connects each book he reads with his personal experience or insight and made these essays sort of a memoir. I just loved these.

15. The Road to Character – David Brooks: This book was suggested to me by a friend almost 4 years ago, and since then all my multiple attempts to read it went in vain. Except the unreadability, everything else is a reason for it. Finally, I got to read it completely this year. Another best book I have read this year. This one talks about the virtues, deeper core values of life we all should thrive for. Used the stories of some people to explain what it takes to travel on this road, which are very inspiring and interesting to read.

16. The Women of Brewster Place – Gloria Naylor: I came to know about this book from the review by Dr. Chowdary Jampala. After reading it I just had to get my hands on it. It was a beautiful book. The stories of seven black women weaved together. After completing it, just one phrase came to my mind, i.e “Steel Magnolias”.

తెలుగు నవలలు/కథలు:

1. నీల – కె . ఎన్. మల్లీశ్వరి: 2018 తానా నవలల పోటీలో బహుమతి పొందిన మూడింటిలో ఒకటి. చదువుతున్నంతసేపూ నచ్చినట్టే ఉన్నా, అప్పటివరకూ స్పష్టమైన అభిప్రాయాలతో సాగుతున్న పాత్రలు చివరికి వచ్చేసరికి ఉన్నట్టుండి కన్ఫ్యూజ్ అయిపోయినట్టు ప్రవర్తించడంతో విసుగొచ్చింది. బహుమతి పొందిన మూడు నవలల్లో ఇది ముందు చదివాను కాబట్టి కొంచెమయినా నచ్చింది. మిగిలినవి చదివినవి తర్వాత చదివుంటే ఈమాత్రమయినా నచ్చేదా అని నాకు అనుమానం.
2. శప్తభూమి – బండి నారాయణస్వామి: తానా నవలల్లో నాకు బాగా నచ్చిన నవల. అద్భుతమయిన కథనం, పాత్రల చిత్రణా చివరివరకూ ఆసక్తిగా చదివించింది. మొదట్లోనే వచ్చే లెక్కలేనన్ని పాత్రలు గందరగోళంగా అనిపించినా కొంతసేపటికి వంశవృక్షం కంఠతా వచ్చేసింది.
3. ఒంటరి – సన్నపురెడ్డి వెంకటరామిరెడ్డి: నాకు నచ్చిన ఇంకో తానా నవల. కథా, కథనం బావున్నాయి. చివర్లో కొంచెం rhetoric గానూ, కొన్ని విషయాలు అసహజంగానూ ఉన్నా, మొత్తానికి మంచి పుస్తకం అని చెప్పొచ్చు.
4. అలరాసపుట్టిళ్ళు – కళ్యాణసుందరీ జగన్నాధ్: ఎప్పుడో ఇరవయ్యేళ్ల క్రిందట ఆవిడ కథ మొదటిసారి చదివినప్పటినుండీ, మొత్తం ఆవిడ కథలు చదవాలన్న కోరిక ఇన్నేళ్ళకి ఇద్దరు స్నేహితురాళ్ల వల్ల తీరింది. అన్ని కథలూ నచ్చినవీ, మళ్ళీ మళ్ళీ చదవాలనిపించేవీనూ.
5. అంటరాని వసంతం – జి. కళ్యాణరావు: ఎన్నో ఏళ్ళ నుంచీ చదవాలనుకుంటున్న పుస్తకం ఇప్పటికి ఓ నేస్తం వల్ల దొరికింది. ఎదురుచూపులు వ్యర్ధం కాలేదు. వివక్ష, దౌర్జన్యం, పేదరికం మధ్య అస్తిత్వం కోసం తరాల పాటూ దళిత జీవన పోరాట చిత్రణ. పుస్తకం చదివిన తర్వాత రాసుకున్న చిన్న స్పందన.
6. అంటరాని వసంతం విమర్శనాత్మక పరిశీలన: డా. సామాన్య: ఈ పుస్తకం మీద డా. సామాన్య పరిశోధన చేసి వ్రాసిన విమర్శనాత్మక వ్యాసం. నవల ఇతివృత్తం, నేపధ్యం, కథనం, శిల్పం మొదలైన విషయాల మీద చేసిన విశ్లేషణ ఆసక్తికరంగా ఉంది.
7. నిజమే కల అయితే – సత్యం మందపాటి: సంచలనాత్మక నవల, ఎంతో పరిశోధన చేసి వ్రాసిన నవల అని ఊరించి, పునర్జన్మల ఎపిసోడ్ కొంచెం ఇంటరెస్టింగ్ గా నడిపి, చివర్లో తూచ్.. ఇదంతా కల/కథ అనేసారు. బహుశా చేసిన పరిశోధన అంతా ఏమీ తేల్చని నలుగురి చర్చల సారాంశంగా ఉండిపోయినట్టుంది. దానికి తోడు కుర్ర జర్నలిస్ట్ అందమయిన ఆడ డాక్టర్ కనిపించిన ప్రతీసారీ నోరువదిలేసి కళ్ళు అప్పచెప్పేసి ఉండిపోవడం అనే జబ్బు ఒకటి విసుగు పుట్టిస్తూ. బాగా నిరాశ కలిగించిన పుస్తకం.
8. సత్యమేవ జయతే – సత్యం మందపాటి : అమెరికా జీవితం పై కథలు. సుజనరంజని పత్రికలో వచ్చినవట. ఒకసారి చదవొచ్చు.
9. నల్లమిరియం చెట్టు – డా. వి. చంద్రశేఖర్ రావు : రెండేళ్ల క్రితమే ఒకసారి చదివినా, మళ్ళీ ఇపుడు చదివాను.
10. ద్రోహవృక్షం – డా. వి. చంద్రశేఖరరావు: కొన్ని కథలు బానే ఉన్నా, కొన్ని కథల్లో రచయిత ఏం చెప్పదలుచుకున్నారో నాకయితే అర్ధం కాలేదు. పైగా చాలా కథల్లో రిపీట్ అయ్యే పాత్రలు / పేర్లు మరింత గందరగోళం. రెండోసారి చదవటం ఇది.
11. ఆకుపచ్చని దేశం – డా. వి. చంద్రశేఖరరావు: ఆదిమవాసుల పోరాటంపై ఇది కూడా రెండవసారి చదవడం.
12. ముగ్గురు కొలంబస్‌లు – సోమరాజు సుశీల: కొని చాలా కాలమయినా ఇప్పటికి చదవడం కుదిరింది. రచయిత్రి అమెరికా ప్రయాణం నేపధ్యంలో వ్రాసిన కథానికలు.
13. కొన్ని నక్షత్రాలు కాసిన్ని కన్నీళ్లు – విమల:
14. కటికపూలు – ఇండస్ మార్టిన్: ఇవన్నీ రచయిత చిన్నప్పటి జ్ఞాపకాలు, అనుభవించిన వివక్ష తిరస్కారాలం ఎదిరించి ఆత్మగౌరవాన్ని పెంచుకోవడం లాంటి విషయాలు. ఈ ఆర్టికల్స్ ఈయన ఫేస్బుక్ లో వ్రాస్తున్నప్పుడే కొన్ని చదివాను. బాగా నచ్చిన పుస్తకం. ప్రతీ వ్యాసానికి చివర కొసమెరుపులు చివుక్కుమనించి, ఆలోచింపచేసిస్తాయి.
15. మూడోముద్రణ – చంద్ర కన్నెగంటి: కథలన్నీ బాగ్గానే ఉన్నా, గత కొన్నేళ్లుగా చంద్ర గారు వ్రాస్తున్న చిట్టి కథలు చదవడం అలవాటయి, ఇవి సాగదీసినట్టుగా అనిపించాయి.
16. పున్నాగపూలు – జలంధర: హ్యూమన్ సైకాలజీ + తాత్విక చింతన కలగలిసిన నవల. ఇతరుల నుండి గౌరవాన్ని ఆశించే ముందు మన ఆత్మగౌరవాన్ని నిలబెట్టుకోవాలని, మన సామర్ధ్యం మనం తెలుసుకోవాలని చెప్పే నవల. ఒకసారి చదవొచ్చు. ఆవిడ కథలతో పోలిస్తే నాకు పెద్దగా నచ్చలేదు.
17. సండే కామెంట్స్ – వేమన వసంతలక్ష్మి: సామాజిక అంశాలమీద సున్నితమయిన చురకలు. ఇవి ఆంధ్రజ్యోతి దినపత్రికలో ప్రతీ ఆదివారం వ్రాసిన కాలమ్ నుండి సేకరించినవి. ముందుమాటలో వ్రాసినట్టు, చదువుతుంటే మర్చిపోయిన ఎన్నో విషయాలని మళ్ళీ గుర్తుకు తెచ్చాయి.
18. ఇన్ ది మూడ్ ఫర్ లవ్ : ఇలా ప్రత్యేక కథల సంకలనాలు తెచ్చినప్పుడు ఎగేసుకుంటూ కొనేసి చదివెయ్యక్కర్లేదు అని, కథ 2017 అపుడు వేసుకున్న మొట్టికాయలు మర్చిపోయి, మళ్ళీ అదే తప్పు చేసాను. ఒక రెండు కథలు మాత్రం పర్వాలేదు అనిపించాయి పుస్తకం మొత్తం మీద. కొన్నిటిని అయితే కథలు అనాలా అనిపించింది. కథలు బలవంతంగా రాస్తే /రాయిస్తే ఎలా ఉంటాయో ఈ రెండు పుస్తకాల్లో చూస్తే తెలుస్తుంది.
19. గుల్జార్ కథలు – డా. సి. మృణాలిని : గుల్జార్ కథలు ఇంతకూ ముందు ఇంగ్లీష్ లో చదివాను. తెలుగులో ఇదే మొదటిసారి. అనువాదం సహజం ఉండి, తెలిసిన కథలే అయినా ఆసక్తిగా చదివించింది.
