నవలలు ఎక్కువగా ఇష్టపడే నాకు షార్ట్ స్టోరీస్ చదవాలనే ఆసక్తి కలిగించిన బహు కొద్దిమంది రచయితల్లో పిరాండేల్లో ఒకరు. ఆయన రాసిన కథల సంపుటి ‘The tales of madness’ చదివిన తరువాత ఆయన మరికొన్ని కథలు చదవాలనే ఆసక్తితో ‘The Oil Jar and Other Stories’ చదవడం జరిగింది. ఇందులో మొత్తం పదకొండు కథలు కాగా చివరి కథ ‘Mrs. Frola and Mr. Ponza,her son-in-law‘ అనే కథ ముందు చెప్పిన పుస్తకంలో కూడా ఉంది,అందులోని పదహారు కథల్లో ఇదొకటి. ‘The tales of madness’ లో తాత్వికత, మానసిక విశ్లేషణల పాళ్ళు ఎక్కువ. అందులో అన్ని కథలూ ‘dark tone’ లో ‘పిచ్చితనం’ అనే అంశం చుట్టూ తిరుగుతాయి. కాగా ఈ కథల సంపుటిలో చాలా వరకూ కథలన్నీ తేలికపాటి హాస్యంతో, సరళమైన ధోరణిలో సాగుతాయి.

ఫిక్షన్, నాన్ ఫిక్షన్ అనే రెండు పాయలనూ రెండు వైపుల నుంచీ సరిసమానంగా అల్లుకొచ్చి చివరకి వాస్తవికతకు ముడి పెట్టడంలో పిరాండేల్లో నైపుణ్యం ప్రతి కథలోనూ కనిపిస్తుంది. ఫిలాసఫీ చదవాలంటే ఒక పుస్తకం, సైకాలజీ చదవాలంటే మరో పుస్తకం, డ్రామా అంటే ఇంకోటీ, Existentialism కోసం మరొకటీ ఇలా ఇన్ని genres ను విడివిడిగా చదవాలనుకోవడం కంటే ఒక్క పిరాండేల్లోని చదివితే చాలు, ఆ పైవన్నీ ఈయన కథల్లో కనిపిస్తాయి. ఈయన కథలు, చదివినవాళ్ళకి అన్ని ఎలిమెంట్స్ సమపాళ్ళలో కుదిరిన ఒక పూర్తి స్థాయి రచన చదివిన తృప్తినిస్తాయి. కథలో ఎక్కడో చాలా సీరియస్ గా ఏదో చెప్తున్నారనుకునేలోపు మధ్యలో చిన్న చమత్కారం దొర్లుతుంది. అలాగే కథలో ఏదో సరదా సందర్భంలో అంతర్లీనంగా నిరాశా నిస్పృహలు, ఇదిగో మేమున్నామంటాయి. ఇంకోచోట మానవసంబంధాలను ఆవిష్కరించే క్రమంలో ఉన్నట్లుండి తాత్వికత తెరపైకొస్తుంది. ఒక్కో కథా పూర్తై పేజీ తిప్పేటప్పుడు ఈయన మాంత్రికుడా లేక కథకుడా అనే అనుమానం కలగలేదంటే ఆశ్చర్యమే.

అన్ని కథల్లోకీ మొదటి కథ Little Hut-Sicilian Sketch కథే కాస్త నిరాశ పరిచింది. మిగతా కథలన్నీ ఒక్కోటీ ఒక్కో ప్రత్యేకత కలిగి ఉంటాయి. రెండో కథ Citrons from Sicily ఒక వాద్యకారుడు Micuccio Bonavino కథ. తను చేసిన సహాయంతో జీవితంలో ఉన్నత స్థానానికి చేరుకున్నప్రేయసి Teresina ను చాలా కాలం తరువాత కలుసుకోవడానికి వెళ్ళినప్పుడు Micuccio కు అక్కడ ఎదురైన పరిస్థితులను గురించి వివరిస్తుంది. కాలగతిలో రూపాంతరం చెందే మానవ సంబంధాలూ, ఊహకూ-వాస్తవానికీ నడుమ సంఘర్షణలూ ఈ కథలో ప్రతిబింబిస్తాయి.

He didn’t see her, he no longer saw her as a living, real person in front of him..What was she saying to him?…Not her voice, nor her eyes, nor her laugh: nothing, nothing of hers did he recognize any more in that dream apparition.

మరో కథ With other eyes లో Anna కు చాలా ఏళ్ళ తరువాత యాదృచ్ఛికంగా తన భర్త మొదటి భార్య ఫోటోగ్రాఫ్ కంటపడుతుంది. Anna,చనిపోయిన ఆమె ఫొటోను చూస్తూ, తనకు పరిచయమైన ఆనాటి స్త్రీ పై గతంలో తన ద్వేషపూరితమైన అభిప్రాయాన్నీ, వర్తమానంలో తన అభిప్రాయాన్నీ పోల్చి చూసుకుంటూ ఆమె ఇమేజ్ ను తన మస్తిష్కంలో పునర్నిర్మించుకునే కథ. ఇది Anna జీవితంలో ఆమెకు తెలీకుండా ఏర్పడిన ఖాళీని చూపిస్తుంది.

And it then seemed to her that those kindly eyes, intense with passion and heartbreak, were pitying her in their turn, were condoling with her over that abandonment, that unrequited sacrifice, that love which remained locked up in her breast like a treasure in a casket to which he had the keys but would never use them, like a miser.

మరో కథ Voice కూడా నాకు చాలా నచ్చిన కథ. అంధుడైన తన యజమాని Silvio Borghi కు అతని తల్లి మరణానంతరం తన కళ్ళతో ప్రపంచాన్ని చూపిస్తూ, తన అందమైన స్వరంతో అతనికి దగ్గరై,ప్రేమలో పడుతుంది Miss Lydia Venturi. వారిద్దరూ పెళ్ళి చేసుకోవాలని నిశ్చయించుకుంటారు. కానీ Silvio కు చూపు వస్తుందని తెలిసి, తన స్వరంలో అతని ఊహాప్రపంచంలో రూపుదిద్దుకున్న అందమైన రూపానికీ, తన అసలు రూపానికీ, వ్యక్తిత్వానికీ చాలా భేదం ఉండటంతో Silvio చీకటి ప్రపంచంలో తన స్వరంలో సృజింపబడిన ప్రతిబింబంగానే మిగిలిపోయి అతన్ని విడిచి వెళ్ళిపోతుంది.

She knew how he saw her from the charm of that voice and from the timid replies he received to his insistent, relentless questions; and in front of her mirror she made every effort to resemble that fictitious image he had of her, every effort to see herself the way he saw her in his darkness. And by this time, even for her, her voice no longer issued from her own lips, but from those he imagined she had; and if she laughed, she suddenly had the impression of not having laughed herself, but rather of having imitated a smile that was not hers, the smile of that other self who lived within his mind.

“There, you’re all mine because you don’t see yourself and you don’t know yourself; because your soul is like a prisoner of your misery and needs me to see, to feel.”

నాకు నచ్చిన మరో కథ A character’s Tragedy,ఇది రచయితలకూ,వారు సృష్టించే పాత్రలకు మధ్య ఉండే సంబంధాన్ని చూపించే కథ. ఇందులో కల్పిత పాత్రలన్నీ రచయిత చుట్టూ చేరి తమ గోడు వెళ్ళబోసుకోవడం సరదాగా ఉంటుంది. అందులో Dr. Fileno అనే కల్పిత పాత్ర, తనకు న్యాయం చెయ్యమని రచయితకు తన వాదనను వినిపిస్తాడు..ఆ వాదోపవాదాల్లో చివరకి ఎవరు నెగ్గారనేది కథ.

And often there is such a mob that I have to give my attention to more than one at the same time. Unless, at some point, my mind becomes so distracted and bewildered that it rejects that double or triple nurturing and shouts in its exasperation: “Either one at a time, quietly and calmly, or all three of you can get lost!”

Dr. Fileno hadn’t even the slightest thought of deriving lessons from the past for the present, because he knew it would be a waste of time and a game for fools. History is an idealized amalgam of elements gathered together in accordance with the nature, likes, dislikes, aspirations and opinions of historians. How, then, can this idealized amalgam be applied to living, effective reality, in which the elements are still separate and scattered?

The oil jar కథ ఆద్యంతం సరదాగా సాగిపోతుంది. అలాగే Mrs. Frola and Mr. Ponza,her son-in-law వాస్తవాన్ని అంగీకరించలేని అత్తా అల్లుళ్ళ కథ. మిగతా కథలు It’s not to be taken seriously, The Fly, Think it over, Giacomino, A Prancing horse లాంటి కథలు కూడా దేనికదే ప్రత్యేకమైనవి. సహజంగా చాలా పుస్తకాలు,చదివిన కొంత కాలానికి మర్చిపోతాను. ఇక కథల్లో పాత్రలైతే అలా వచ్చి ఇలా హలో అని పలకరించి వెళ్ళిపోతాయి. కానీ పిరాండేల్లో పాత్రల చిత్రీకరణ సరళంగా, vulnerable గా వాస్తవానికి చాలా దగ్గరగా ఉండటంతో మరపుకి చాలా దూరం. ఏ పాత్ర చూసినా, ఎక్కడో పరిచయస్తుల్లా అనిపిస్తారు. మన ప్రక్కనే కూర్చుని మనతో తమ మనసు లోతుల్లోని ప్రతి భావాన్నీ, భయాన్నీ, ఆందోళనని, పిచ్చితనాన్నీ చాలా కాలానికి కలిసిన బాల్య స్నేహితుల్లా, ఏ దాపరికం లేకుండా మనతో పంచుకుంటారు. ముఖ్యంగా హ్యూమన్ ఎమోషన్స్ ను పండించడంలో ఈయనది ఒక ప్రత్యేక శైలి అనొచ్చు. అలాగే మానవ స్వభావాల వర్ణనల్లో పిరాండేల్లోకి సరిసమానంగా నిలవగల రచయితలు బహు అరుదు అనడం కూడా అతిశయోక్తి కాదేమో. మంచి రచనా నైపుణ్యం కలిగిన ఒక గొప్ప సైకియాట్రిస్ట్ ని కలవాలంటే Luigi Pirandello ని చదవాల్సిందే.
