2018లో నా పుస్తకాలు

2018లో నా వృత్తి జీవితంలో మార్పులు రావటంతో నా దైనందిన జీవితంలో కొన్ని ముఖ్యమైన మార్పులు చేసుకోవలసి వచ్చింది. సంవత్సరంలో కొంత కాలం ఈ మార్పులకు అలవాటు పడటానికే సరిపోయింది. ఐనా, గత కొన్ని సంవత్సరాలతో పోల్చుకొంటే ఈ సంవత్సరం చదువుకోవటానికి ఎక్కువగానే వీలు దొరికింది. ఈ సంవత్సరం ప్రత్యేకత ఏమిటంటే, మొదటి రెండు నెలల్లో రవీంద్రనాథ్ టాగోర్‌ని, ఆఖరి రెండు నెలలలో ఆర్కే నారాయణ్‌నీ విస్తృతంగా చదవగలగడం. అనురాగ్ బసు హిందీలో తీసిన టెలివిజన్ సీరియల్ Stories by Rabindranath Tagore చూశాక, గత నలభై ఏళ్ళలో టాగోర్‌ని చదవలేదన్న విషయం మనసుకు తోచింది. ముఖ్యంగా ఆయన కథలు చదవాలనిపించింది. బెంగాలీలో చిన్నకథలకు ఆద్యుడు తానే ఐనా, టాగోర్ చాలా పరిణతి చెందిన కథకుడు. ముఖ్యంగా స్త్రీల సమస్యల గురించి చాలా కథలు, చాలా ఆర్తితో రచించాడు. టాగోర్‌ని కొంత చదివాక, అంతర్జాతీయంగా ప్రఖ్యాతి గడించిన మరో భారత రచయిత ఆర్కే నారాయణ్ రాసినవన్నీ చదవాలనిపించింది. 2017లో తానా పోటీ నవలలను హడావిడిగా పోటీని దృష్టిలో పెట్టుకుని చదివాను. వాటినీ, అంతకుముందు బహుమతి అందుకున్న వాటినీ మళ్ళీ శ్రద్ధగా చదవాలనిపించింది. కాలేజ్ రోజుల్లో చాలా ఇష్టంగా చదివిన ఆలిస్టైర్ మెక్లీన్ నవలలు మిత్రుడు చెరుకూరి శ్రీనివాస్ అరువు ఇచ్చాడు, కొన్ని వుడ్హౌస్ నవలలతో పాటు. 2018 బుక్ ఫెయిర్‌కు వెళ్ళలేకపోయినా జూన్‌లో ఒక వారం ఇండియా వెళ్ళటంతో, కొన్ని కొత్త తెలుగు పుస్తకాలు, ముఖ్యంగా చాలా కథాసంకలనాలు దొరికాయి. ఈ పుస్తకాల పురుగుకు 2018లో రుచికరమైన పౌష్టికాహారం సంతృప్తికరంగా దొరికినట్లే.

Fear is the Key – Alistair Maclean. Alistair Maclean was a best selling author of 60s and 70s with several of his novels also being hit movies. In addition to the four novels here which were made into films, other films include the Guns of Navarone, Puppet on a Chain etc. He was one of my favorite authors during my college years, starting with the Caravan to Vaccares (which I borrowed from my uncle during the summer vacation shortly after joined the medical college). His novels included good measure of suspense and thrill with interesting twists and turns. It was a great pleasure to getting to read them again. Vijay Anand’s Chupa Rustum was loosely based on Fear is the Key.

The Golden Rendezvous – Alistair Maclean; Another favorite novel. If I remember right, one of the early Shadow novels in Telugu was based on this novel. I also remember reading a draft of an adaptation of this novel by one of my uncles.

Where Eagles Dare – Alistair Maclean. A blockbuster film with Richard Burton and Clint Eastwood; non-stop action and breezy dialogue.

Ice Station Zebra – Alistair Maclean. Another interesting novel. The film was much slower and not as engaging.

 

Hot Water – P.G. Wodehouse

Love Story – Erich Segal. “What can you say about a twenty-five-year-old girl who died? That she was beautiful. And brilliant. That she loved Mozart and Bach. And the Beatles. And me.” “Love means never having to say you’re sorry.” These lines were quite popular in the 70s from a very popular novel and an even more popular film. Read it again after many years. A simple story told brilliantly and economically. (Trivia: In 2000, during the presidential campaign, there was a story that Al and Tipper Gore were the models for the lead couple in this story. Segal was friends with Al Gore and his roommate Tommy Lee Jones. Segal said Jones was more a model for the hero than Al, and Tipper had nothing to do with the novel).

The Martian Chronicles –Ray Bradbury. Returned to this one also after a long time. (Another trivia: Bradbury was born in Waukegan, IL, where I lived for many years during my early years in US). Need to read all his works again.

 

American Dialogue: The founders and us – Joseph J Ellis. The lives and times of the Founding fathers of US and how their approaches contrast with the way the US now deals with various issues like race, foreign policy etc. Very informative and, in some ways, illuminating.

Empress: The astonishing reign of Nur Jahan – Ruby Lal. Interesting story of a remarkable woman, born that became the most powerful woman/ person of her times. Professor Lal documents meticulously her rise to (and fall from) power. Learned a lot about that period in our history.

The Accidental President: Harry S Truman and the four months that changed the world – A.J. Baime. A series of unplanned events end up with Harry Truman becoming President. Then, he had to deal with an extraordinary time in the history – The defeat of the Nazis, formation of UN, the Potsdam Conference, the Manhattan Project, Dropping the Atom Bomb, and the surrender of Japan – all of it happening in a span of four months. Wow.

Rising Star, Setting Sun: Dwight Eisenhower, John Kennedy and the presidential transition that changed America — John T. Shaw. A dashing young democrat, as he campaigns for office, ridicules the reign of the older Republican President, then the latter had to hand power over to the former. A good description of the two men and the time they clashed.

Hit Refresh – Satya Nadella. ‘Our guy’ talks about his philosophy of life and how he sees the future. Hint: AI is going to play a large role in it.

The Epic City: the world on the streets of Calcutta — Kushanava Choudhury. A young man raised partially in Calcutta and New Jersey returns time and again to Calcutta, working as a journalist at the Statesman. A candid portrait of Calcutta, its people and its ethos. One of my favorite reads this year.

She Made Me Laugh: My friend, Nora Ephron — Richard Cohen. Cohen makes his long time friend, the famous writer, director Nora Ephron come alive in this book. Enjoyed it.

Bunk: the rise of hoaxes, humbug, plagiarists, phonies, post-facts, and fake news — Kevin Young. A large tome of interesting stories.

Himalaya: A literary homage to adventure, meditation, and life on top of the world – Edited by Ruskin Bond and Namita Gokhale. An eclectic collection of writings about the Himalayas starting with an account of Fahien.

Seduced by Mrs. Robinson – How THE GRADUATE became the touchstone of a generation – Beverly Gray. An exploration of the creation and aftermath of a landmark film. Interesting for those familiar with the film. (More trivia: Professor Rao Vemuri mentions this film in his autobiography: his wife appears in a scene)

Chronicles of a Liquid Society – Umberto Eco. A collection of essays on varied topics.

Enlightenment Now: The case for science, reason, humanism and progress – Steven Pinker. Pinker posits that the world is a better place for most people than it was, and reason and science are essential for solving our remaining problems.

Blockchain Revolution – How the technology behind Bitcoin is changing money, business, and the world – Don Tapscott and Alex Tapscott

The Age of Cryptocurrency: How Bitcoin and the blockchain are challenging the global economic order – Paul Vigna and Michael J. Casey

The Best of the Harvard Lampoon.

The Best American Short Stories – (Ed.) Junot Diaz

A Light in the Window – Jan Karon. I liked the first book in the Milford series, but found this second one a bit meandering.

The Little French Bistro –- Nina George. A tourist to Paris, disenchanted with her life, ends up on a small seaside village and discovers herself. Liked it.

Possession – A.S. Byatt. Was a bit meandering.

The Women of Brewster Place – Gloria Naylor; liked it and wrote about it in Pustakam.

The Story of Lucy Gault – William Naylor. Brilliantly written story of a young girl that gets into an unfortunate accident and pays a heavy price for it, as does the man who was an indirect cause of it.

The Midnight Witness — Sara Bradlee. Two separate murders in Copenhagen end up getting linked each other, dragging the lead detective’s best friend into the middle of it.  A novel setting.

The Friend – Sigrid Nunez. Quite a quirky theme. A scholar loses her mentor and friends and ends up with his dog and gets obsessed with it.

Hard Time – Sara Paretsky. A V.I. Warshawski novel. Surprisingly Warshawski willingly goes to prison to solve a murder. A well written account of prison life.

A State of Freedom – Neel Mukherjee. This is a novel, but probably should be considered as five loosely connected stories. Very well written.

Murder As A Fine Art – David Morrell. A mass murder mystery / adventure set in London in the 1850s, solved by an opium addicted author – who is the one of the suspects. Period novel in period style.

Jesus’ Son – Denis Johnson. A collection of short stories by Johnson, a National Book Award winning writer who died about two years ago.

Train Dreams – Denis Johnson. A small novel set in the 19^th century of a rail road worker who loses his family. Despite its small size, it is quite evocative and thought provoking.

A Burial at Sea – Charles Finch. A mystery novel set in a British military ship sailing to Cairo on a diplomatic mission. Interesting setting, not much as a mystery.

Heating and Cooling: 52 Micro-memoirs — Beth Ann Fennelly. Very interesting concept. 52 ‘memoirs’ – some a few sentences long, some a few paragraphs long, but none more than a couple of pages. Together, they paint a picture of the protagonist’s life.

Magpie Murders – Anthony Horowitz. A literary agent is left with a detective novel by her best selling author with the final chapter missing. So, we get two novels in one as she tries to figure the ending and solve the mystery of the death of the author.

Other People’s Houses – Abbi Waxman. About a bunch of neighbors and friends whose lives get upended when one of them gets into marital troubles. Interesting book and characters.

The Good Pilot, Peter Woodhouse – Alexander McCall Smith. Set in England during the second world war with interesting characters.

Peaceful Vices (Poetry)– Bhavana Bhattiprolu, with Telugu translation by Vadrevu China Veerabhadrudu
