“త్రివేణి వ్యవస్థాపక సంపాదకులు- శ్రీ కోలవెన్ను రామకోటీశ్వరరావుగారు” అన్న వ్యాసం ద్వారా తన మధురానుభూతుల్ని మనతో పంచుకున్న సి.ఎస్.రావుగారు రాసిన పుస్తకం “టాక్స్ ఆండ్ ఆర్టికల్స్” అన్న పుస్తకాన్ని పరిచయం చేయబోతున్నానిప్పుడు.  మొన్నటి ఎప్రిల్ మాసంలో రావుగారి పుస్తకావిష్కరణ సభకు, నాకూ, సౌమ్యకి ఆహ్వానం అందగానే, వైదేహిగారిని కలిసే అరుదైన అవకాశాన్ని జారవిడుచుకోవద్దన్న ఉద్దేశ్యంతో ఇద్దరం వెళ్లాం. పుస్తకావిష్కరణ సభ ఘనంగా జరిగింది. రావుగారి పుస్తకాన్ని మాకు బహూకరించారు. అసలే ఆ సభలోనే సాహిత్యపు విషయాలను చాలా లోతుగా చర్చించారు అతిధులు. పుస్తకం తెరచి చూస్తే, మిల్టన్, కీట్స్, విశ్వనాథ, సరోజిని నాయుడు వంటి వారిని గురించి ఈ వ్యాసాలనగానే, “హమ్మో!” అనుకొని పుస్తకం పక్కకి పెట్టేశాను. మొన్న ఇక్కడ మనందరికి పరిచయం చేసిన రామకోటేశ్వరరావుగారి గురించి పుస్తకంలో కూడా రాసారని గుర్తుకురాగానే, పుస్తకం చదవటం మొదలెట్టి, పూర్తి చేశాను. పుస్తక విశేషాలు ఇక్కడ.

పిలుపుల్లో ఏముంటుంది? ఉండాల్సిన గౌరవం, ప్ర్రేమ, ఆప్యాయత వంటివి మనసులో ఉండాలని కొందరు అభిప్రాయపడినా, మన పిలుపుల్లోనే ఆయా వ్యక్తి పట్ల మన ఆదరాభిమానాలు తెలుస్తాయి. ఒక ఆంగ్ల వ్యాసం రాస్తూ, ఒకరి పేరు వెనుక తెలుగులో గౌరవార్థకంగా వాడే “గారు”ను తీయలేకపోయేరంటే, కోటేశ్వరరావుగారి పట్ల రచయితకు గల గౌరవాభిమానాలు వ్యక్తమవుతాయి. “Sri Ramakoteshwara Rao Gaaru As I Knew Him” అన్నది వ్యాసం శీర్షిక కూడా. అనుకోకుండా ఓ గొప్ప వ్యక్తిని గురించి తెల్సుకొని, తొలి పరిచయంలోనే వారి పట్ల భక్తిగౌరవాలను ఏర్పరుచుకొని, మొదట కల్సిన పని పూర్తయినా కూడా రాకపోకలు కొనసాగిస్తూ, మాటల ఇటుకులను పేరుస్తూ అవినాభావ సంబంధానికి పునాదులు వేసి, దూరాభారాల్లో కూడా అందమైన ఆ బంధాన్ని విస్మరించక, ఆఖరకు చితిదాకా సాగనంపే దాకా సాగిన అపురూపమైన బంధాన్ని ఈ వ్యాసం ప్రతిబింబిస్తుంది. రామకోటేశ్వరరావుగారు త్రివేణి సంపాదకులు. స్వాతంత్ర్య సమరయోధులు. ఆయన గుణగణాలు రాస్తూ పోవాలంటే ఒక పుస్తకం సరిపోకపోవచ్చు. వారి జీవితచరమాంకంలోనే రచయిత వారిని కలిసినా, చాలా విషయాలు తెల్సుకునే ఉండవచ్చును, వృత్తిపరమైనవి, వ్యక్తిగతమైనవి. వాటిని అక్కడక్కడా చూచాయిగా చెప్తూనే, వ్యాసశీర్షికకు పూర్తి న్యాయం చేకూరుస్తూ తమ అనుభవాలను చాలా బాగా చెప్పుకొచ్చారు. నేహ్రూగారు నాగార్జున సాగర్ ప్రాజెక్ట్ కు పునాది రాయి వేయడానికి వచ్చినప్పటి అనుభవాలను కూడా ఒక వ్యాసంలో పొందుపరిచారు.

వర్డ్స్ వర్త్, మిల్టన్, టాగోర్, నెహ్రూ, సరోజిని నాయుడు, రాజారావు, కీట్స్, తిలక్, విశ్వనాథ సత్యనారాయణ తదితరుల రచనల గురించిన వ్యాసాలున్నాయి. ఇవ్వన్నీ ఆయన ఆకాశవాణిలో ఇచ్చిన “టాక్స్”.  అందుకే వ్యాసలన్నీ క్లుప్తంగా, సూటిగా ఉంటాయి. పుస్తకంలో ప్రస్తావించబడ్డ చాలా మంది ప్రముఖ రచయితలనూ, వారి రచనలూ నేను చదవకపోయినా, పూర్తి అవగాహన కలిగించేలా ఉన్నాయి వ్యాసాలన్నీ. రాజారావు గారి నవల్లో భారతీయతను గురించి, డబ్భ్హైల్లో వచ్చిన ఆంగ్లో-ఇండియన్ కవిత్వాన్ని గురించి చక్కగా వివరించారు. ఇహ, నాకు బాగా నచ్చిన తిలక్, టాగోర్ల సంగతైతే వేరే చెప్పనే అక్కరలేదు. వారి కవిత్వంలో ఉన్న అందాన్ని, సరళత్వాన్ని బాగా వివరించారు. తిలక్, విశ్వనాథ లాంటి ప్రఖ్యాత తెలుగు కవుల గురించి ఆంగ్లంలో చదవటం ఉత్తేజపరిచింది. తెలుగేతరులకు మన సాహిత్యం పరిచయం చేయాలంటే ఇలాంటి వ్యాసాలు చాలా ముఖ్యమని నా నమ్మకం. రావు గారు కొన్ని తిలక్ కవితలకు స్వేచ్ఛానువాదాలు కూడా చేయటం వల్ల, ఆయా వ్యాసాలకు పరిపూర్ణత వచ్చింది. ఈ పుస్తకంలో కేవలం టాక్స్ కాక, ఒక చిన్న నాటిక, మరో “మ్యూసింగ్” లాంటి వ్యాసం ఉన్నాయి.

ఈ పుస్తకంలో నన్ను అమితంగా ప్రభావం చేసిన కొన్ని వాక్యాలు.

Reading books is like taking tonics. The number of tonics one has to take is simply immaterial, and what is important is how strong, healthy and happy does one feels having taken them. The number of books we have read is simply irrelevant if they have not contributed to our critical understanding of life’s situations, to our maturity of outlook, to our logicality of thinking, and to the beauty and harmony of our perspective.

Tilak’s poetry thrills us, makes a haunting impression on us, and it recurs to our mind again and again like a dear one for whom we long day and night.

Poetry can’t reside in an ornament.

Nehru is a supreme artist in words. He is one with a poet’s imagination and sensuous perception of things and feelings. Let him write on the drabbest details of a common place occurrence, the whole thing is transmuted through the crucible of his sensibility into one of the rare impressiveness. No wonder he is considered one of the finest writers of English prose in the world. He never strives for effect, but effect follows his word on tiptoe.

When our spirits droop and courage fails, when our steps falter and grope in darkness of diffidence and despair we turn to literature for solace. The kind of literature to which we go, whether we seek delight or solace depends upon our mood, our emotional needs. Literature offers us many things: delight, courage, enlightenment, solace and philosophic calm. When I’m beset with problems and lose my way, I recite poems from “Gajendramoksham”; I get pleasure and solace, regain calm of mind, and my way becomes clear and steps steady.

A place is like a mirror, which reflects your own image. An emotional dimension because of the love you’ve developed for it, hallows the place, and it captivates your heart. It may sound strange at first, but you find it true on reflection, if someone tells you that you may dislike all its people, and yet you like the place. A place is not just its people and it is not bound by them. It, of course, includes them, but transcends them. Thus it sound stranger when you’re told that you like a place even where you’re not happy?

ఈ రచనలో ముఖ్యంగా చెప్పుకోవాల్సింది, వైదేహి గారు రాసిన ముందుమాట! రచయితను గూర్చి, ఆ రచన గురించి నిష్పక్షపాతంగా చదువరికి ఒక బాలెన్స్డ్ అభిప్రాయం ఇవ్వడానికి ముందుమాటలు పనికొస్తాయి. కాకపోతే, రచయితను చాలా దగ్గర నుండి చూసిన వారు, అనుబంధాన్ని పంచుకున్నవారు రాసే ముందుమాటల్లో ఆ బాలెన్స్డ్ అభిప్రాయంతో పాటు, ఒక అత్మీయత కూడా ఉంటుంది. ఇది పుస్తకాన్ని, రచయితనూ అర్థంచేసుకోడానికి, వారితో ఒక “పర్సనెల్” బాండ్ కలిగిన ప్రభావం చూపిస్తుంది. జావేద్ అఖ్తర్ రాసిన “టాకింగ్ సాంగ్స్” అనే పుస్తకంలో ఆయన భార్య, షబనా ఆజ్మీ రాసిన ముందు మాట నాకు చాలా ఇష్టం. అదే స్థాయిలో ఉన్న ఈ పుస్తకం ముందుమాట కూడా నాకు చాలా నచ్చింది. వైదేహి గారు, ఈ టాక్స్ గురించి, వారి నాన్నగారి సాహిత్యపు అభిరుచులను చాలా క్షుణ్ణంగా పరిచయం చేసినా, ఆవిడన్న ఒక్కమాటను గుర్తుచేస్తూ, ఈ వ్యాసం ముగిస్తున్నాను.
