On the evening Margio killed Anwar Sadat, Kyai Jahro was blissfully busy with his fishpond. A scent of brine wafted through the coconut palms, the sea moaned at a high pitch, and a gentle wind ruffled the algae, coral trees and lantanas.

ఈ ఓపెనింగ్ లైన్స్ చదివేశాక ఏదో సస్పెన్స్ థ్రిల్లర్ అన్నారు ఇదేమిటి ఇలా చేశారు అని పుస్తకం ప్రక్కన పెట్టే ఆస్కారం ఇవ్వకుండా అసలా హత్య ఎలా జరిగింది? ఒక 20 ఏళ్ళ సాదాసీదా యువకుడు అంత దారుణంగా అసలా హత్య ఎందుకు చెయ్యవలసి వచ్చింది అనే దిశగా పాఠకుల ఆలోచనలను మళ్ళిస్తారు తన అద్భుతమైన narration తో రచయిత Eka Kurniawan. కట్టిపడేసే వచనంతో ఈ నవల 2016 మాన్ బుకర్ ప్రైజ్ లాంగ్ లిస్ట్ లో ఒకటిగా నిలిచింది. ‘Beauty is a wound’ అనే నవల ద్వారా సాహితీరంగంలో తన స్థానాన్ని సుస్థిరం చేసుకున్న ఈ ఇండోనేషియన్ యువ రచయిత,సౌత్ ఈస్ట్ ఆసియన్ సాహిత్యానికి తన రచనల ద్వారా ఒక గుర్తింపు తీసుకొచ్చారు అంటారు. ఇండోనేషియా సాహిత్యం పై సుహార్తో ముఫైయ్యేళ్ళ సుదీర్ఘ నియంతృత్వం ప్రభావం కారణంగా చాలా యదార్థాలు వెలుగులోకి రాలేదని అక్కడి వర్ధమాన రచయితలు ఇప్పటికీ భావిస్తున్నారు. ఇండోనేషియన్ స్కాలర్ Benedict Anderson రాసిన ముందుమాటలో ఈ విషయం పై మాట్లాడుతూ, ఇండోనేషియా ప్రసిద్ధ రచయిత Pramoedya Ananta Toer ని గురించి ప్రస్తావించారు. సుహార్తో పాలనలో Pramoedya 14 ఏళ్ళు నిర్బంధంలో ఉండటం, ఆ తరువాత కనుమరుగైపోవడం, ఆయన రచనలు నిషేధించబడడం గురించి చెప్తూ, Pramoedya సోషల్ రియలిజం పై Eka Kurniawan ధైర్యంగా సబ్మిట్ చేసిన థీసిస్ గురించి ప్రస్తావిస్తూ Pramoedya కు సాహితీ వారసుడు Eka అని కొనియాడారు. ఆయన రాసిన ఈ విషయాలు ఆసక్తికరంగా ఉన్నాయి.

The most exhilarating part of literature’s history is that it has no teleology and is not driven by the chariot of Progress. The most original writers seem like unexpected meteorites. Who could predict the arrival of Sophocles, Virgil, Lady Murasaki, Cervantes, Melville, Lu Hsün, Shakespeare, Proust, Gogol, Ibsen, Márquez, or Joyce? They are in one sense the product of their epochs and, in another, of the vernacular languages into which they were born and raised. But uncountable numbers lived at the same time, spoke the same languages and wrote nothing memorable. Class and education cannot explain their arrival. Their familial ancestors and descendants rarely show any substantive literary talents. Eka Kurniawan is certainly Indonesia’s most original living writer of novels and short stories, and its most unexpected meteorite.

For some time Margio was frozen in awe and puzzlement, until he understood what must have happened. She hadn’t left him. The tigress was there, a part of him, the two of them inseparable until death. He leaned against the wall, rubbed his navel, below which he sensed the tigress now resided. She wasn’t tame after all. To Agung Yuda, he jokingly said: “I’m not single anymore.”

ఈ పుస్తకం లో ముఖ్యం గా చెప్పుకోవలసింది రచనలోని boldness గురించి. మనం చెడు చూడకూడదు అని కళ్ళు, చెవులు మూసుకున్నంత మాత్రాన యదార్థాన్నీ, జరిగే దారుణాలనీ విస్మరించలేమనేది నిజం. ఇందులో Margio కుటుంబ పరిస్థితులు ఆ సమాజాన్ని ప్రతిబింబిస్తాయి. కథలో అంతర్భాగంగానే ఇండోనేషియా సంస్కృతి-సంప్రదాయాలు, కుటుంబ-వివాహ వ్యవస్థ, ఆర్థిక-సామజిక పరిస్థితులు మొదలైనవాటిని కూడా మనకు పరిచయం చేస్తారు. ఇందులో ఒక ప్రక్క వైట్ టైగర్ మనిషిని ఆవహించడం అనే అంశం ఆసక్తికరంగా ఉంటే, Komar-Nuraeni ల దాంపత్య జీవితాన్ని గురించిన వర్ణనలు అస్సలు జీర్ణించుకోలేని విధంగా ఉంటాయి. ఇందులో తాను చెప్పాలనుకున్నది చెప్పడంలో రచయిత ఎక్కడా రాజీపడిన దాఖలాలు కనిపించవు. భరించలేనంత చేదుగా ఉన్నా ఇదే నిజం, ఇష్టమైతే రుచి చూడండి అన్నట్లు ఉంటుంది ఆయన శైలి. కొన్ని చోట్ల మితిమీరిన వర్ణన అనిపించినా, తరువాత కథానుసారం ఆ అవసరం ఉందని పాఠకులకి అర్థం అవుతుంది. Narration ఒక ప్రవాహంలా ఎక్కడా విసుగు కలగనీయదు. ఇందులోని సస్పెన్స్, ఫాంటసీ, మాజికల్ రియలిజం, కాల్పనికత, Supernatural లాంటి ఎలిమెంట్స్ అన్నీ కూడా కొంచెం కొంచెంగా తగుపాళ్ళలో ఉండి నవలను ఆపకుండా చదివిస్తాయి. నేను మధ్య మధ్య లో ఆపి చదివాను కానీ ఒక్క సిట్టింగ్ లో పూర్తి చెయ్యగలిగితే మరింత నచ్చేదేమో అనిపించింది.

పుస్తకంనుండి మరికొన్ని అంశాలు:

The tiger was white as a swan, vicious as an ajak. Mameh saw it once, briefly, emerging from Margio’s body like a shadow. She would never see it again. There was one sign that the tigress was still inside Margio, and Mameh didn’t know if anyone else had spotted what it was. In the dark, the yellow glint of a cat’s eye shone in Margio’s pupils. At first, Mameh was scared to look into those eyes, terrified that the tiger might actually reemerge. But with time and frequent exposure to Margio, she grew used to seeing those eyes light up in the dark, and she stopped worrying. The tigress wasn’t her enemy and wouldn’t hurt her; maybe it was there to protect them all.

According to Ma Muah, the tigresses lived with their owners and guarded them against all dangers. She said that Grandpa was among those who kept a white tiger. But he would never talk to his grandson about the tiger because, he said, Margio was too young and couldn’t possibly tame such a savage animal. It was bigger than a clouded leopard, bigger than the ones people saw at the zoo or circus or in school-books. If a man couldn’t control his beast, it could turn so violent that nothing could restrain it once enraged.
