Books 2016

This has been a busy year for me with a lot of travel and work on different fronts. Finding leisure time was difficult. At some point, I stopped visiting our local library. While I went to India thrice during the year and collected a lot of Telugu books, most of them are still waiting to be read. I think I wrote about one book in pustakam.net in the whole year. I regret that, once again, I cannot elaborate a little bit more about some of the books I read this year. Despite everything, I did get to read a lot of interesting stuff this year. Reading (and meeting) Ki.Raajanaaraayanan was an interesting experience. My medical school mentor wrote a novel, and a friend from my Guntur days edited a couple of important books. I thoroughly enjoyed getting reacquainted with the mystery short stories. There was also a good bit of nostalgic and pulp reading this year. A Stone for Danny Fisher, from Harold Robbins’ early days and a favorite novel during our college days, turned out to be still a very good read. I did not keep track of everything I read, but I think this list is almost complete.

మ్యూజిక్ డైస్ అను ఒక మరణవాంగ్మూలము – అరుణ్ సాగర్ Arun Sagar’s heart wrenching poems about the flight of the dispossessed and the displaced. Besides being well produced, this is one of the most touching books I read this year. I have been a fan of Arun Sagar (1967-2016) since I first read మేల్ కొలుపు in 2002. Always enjoyed reading his unique take on things and his inimitable writing style. I saw him last at the 25 years of Katha function. He offered this book and I said I already got it from our mutual friend, Srisri Printers Visveswara Rao. I now regret not asking him for an autographed copy. I read it a little late – the day before I was leaving from India, and had a long phone conversation with him immediately after finishing the book. I was shocked to learn of his passing away within two weeks. I will miss him.

Steel Magnolias (play) – Robert Harkin; A play about five Southern women (in Louisiana) as they struggle with life’s travails. The title refers to these women – delicate as the magnolia flower, but display that they are made of steel when the occasion demands it. Made into a hit film starring Julia Roberts, Sally Field, Shirley Maclaine, Dolly Parton, Olympia Dukakis and Darryl Hannah.

The Best of American Mystery Stories – James Patterson

Wakes on the Horizon, A selection of poems translated from Telugu – N S Murty. Facebookers with literary interest are familiar with the translations of Sri Murty.

Novels
Reputations – Juan Gabriel Vasquez; liked it a lot. An aging courageous political cartoonist in Colombia confronts the impact of his actions.

Dreaming in Cuban – Cristina Garcia; about a Cuban family with some members still in Cuba and some immigrated to US; began well but became a little difficult to read as it progressed.

The Children – Ann Leary; An agoraphobic fake blogger, her mentally ill sister, her wacky mom, her lover, a gold-digging fiancée of her brother make for a very interesting novel.

My Name is Lucy Barton – Elizabeth Strout; An interesting novel about the relationship between a mother and daughter.

Lost in a Good Book – Jasper Fforde. A very interesting sci-fi book, except that this has a lot to do with famous books and literary characters. At times, very funny.

The Lives of Tao – Wesley Chu; Kind of a sci-fi novel with a very interesting premise and a good read for the most part.

The Martian – Andy Weir; brilliantly conceived and well written; later an interesting film.

A Stone for Danny Fisher – Harold Robbins; an old favorite reread decades later. Still interesting.

Non-fiction

Pioneer Women – Joanna L Stratt; An account of the life of women in the Kansas prairies as it was being settled in the late 1800s. Paints a very good picture of what the pioneers had to endure through as they struggled with an often inhospitable environment and occasional problems from their own species.

The Movie Book. A book about the history of movies (almost all of them Euro-American) with notes about many important movies and moviemakers.

Skeptic – Michael Shermer; A collection of columns Prof. Shermer wrote for Scientific American, defining what skepticism is about and exposing much non-scientific nonsense.

Naked Money – Charles Wheelan: A well written book about money. Glad to have read it a while before demonetization.

Seven Brief Lessons on Physics – Carlo Rovelli

Komagatamaru: Not Just a Voyage – Malwinderjit Singh Wariach and Gurdev Singh Sidhu: An authoritative account of the struggles of a group of Punjabees against racism in India and Canada.

Games Indians Play: Why we are the way we are — V Raghunathan. From the title I thought it was going to be an Indian version of Eric Berne’s famous book about transactional analysis. This is about interpreting the Indian society from the Game theory perspective

Steve Jobs – Walter Isaacson. A well told story of an interesting person that helped change the world in many ways.

When Breath Becomes Air – Paul Kalanidhi. A promising young neurosurgeon with interests in literature and philosophy on the verge of beginning his career finds that he has a brain tumor with poor prognosis and decides to share his story with the world.

Liar, a memoir – Rob Roberge; Roberge, an author and guitarist, picks a very interesting way of narrating his own story without being clear about how much of it is true.

Steve McCurry – Phaidon (Photographs); McCurry is the photographer famous for the Afghan girl photograph. I was at an exhibition of his photographs in Utica in August and got this book.
