I am reading Erich Fromm’s book ‘The Art of Loving’ which is really interesting and every one who wants to love and to be loved should read it. Aha, but before referring to those statues right infront of the sanctum sanctorum in Tirumala, how about getting some art historical data i.r.t those statues, and paying a visit to Virupaksha temple in Hampi, etc. etc.

I didn’t pay a visit to Virupaksha temple yet, I hope to do so in future. Does Krishnadevaraya wear a Central Asian outfit there? So, now the line of argument is Why is Krishnadevaraya dressed differently in different temples and which one is authentic etc etc.,

You asked me to know some ‘art historical data’ before referring to Tirumala statue, I would like to assure you that I did, and I also did refer to the very paper you quoted. With the right key words and a beginner level understanding of using google, its not a big deal – locating crap like this, its the first hit on google

The sarcastic comment about professors and their theories is not without a purpose. What dress are you wearing now, sir? Is it Indian, western, Islamic? Look at all these people in Andhra who discarded their “పంచెకట్టు” to offices. It is a trivial fact that people started wearing western outfits. The growth of human knowledge has been explained by the activity of problem solving. This knowledge about dresses and cultural influences on dresses, what problem does that solve? what does this tell the future generations about us? That The British were here and the Moghuls were here? Hell, yeah – they were here. One doesn’t have to deduce this fact from a crappy piece of writing on Armani suites and Reebok shoes. It is trivial isn’t it? If such a research about dresses and cultural influences give me the theoretical tools to understand what makes something or someone Indian or what makes someone or something un-Indian, then I would be glad to read them and acknowledge their greatness.

I wouldn’t give a hoot in hell to what Srikrishnadevaraya wore and what he ate for lunch, is it Hindu food/western food/Islamic food or a fusion of all these. I wouldn’t give a damn if Srikrishnadevaraya went to his royal court in his knickers everyday as log as he ruled the way he did, wrote the books he wrote, behaved the way he did and built the empire that the great Vijayanagara was. What matters to me is the what he did and why he did than what he had for breakfast and which wife of his wore which cultural dress. If this is the ‘art history data’ that you were referring to, I’d say “some times, Ignorance is indeed bliss”

Now those who write volumes about the crap like this, that professors are the dogs and their theories, the fleas. Some people might find them useful and they might quote them here and there, which they are free to do. Some people like me might hate them, and denounce them here and there, which they are equally free to do. As long as both of us understand this, we don’t have a problem 🙂

Anyway, I don’t want to drag this topic on a forum like this and this is my last note

The next time you go to Tirumala, look for Srikrishnadevaraya’s statue with his wives – thats how he dressed and thats how he probably looked like.

And theories of islam-western-whatnot-isation – Well, HL Mencken said ” A professor must have a theory as a dog must have fleas” – So there! 🙂

BTW, Krishnadevaraya, indeed, is/was wearing a Central Asian outfit – both on “Tankbund statue” and in real life too :). Even “anna gaaru” was wearing a central Asian outfit in the film: “Tenali Ramakrishna” (1956). See: P.B. Thenneti Suri’s Changhiz Khan is my favorite book too and I too don’t remember how many times I have read that book. I love it so much that I (and my parents) sometimes call my daughter as “Temu”. This is one of the books I brought with me to the US.

By the way, in the first page of the book Thenneti Suri acknowledged that the historical aspects of the book are based on Henry H. Howorth’s Mongol history.

Read two books this week: God of small things – Arundhati Roy and Brave New World – Aldous Huxley. I have been putting away both the books since so many years. But once I started reading them I was taken to a different world. Both the books are amazingly written, although brave new world is sometimes boring, I did flip through couple of first few pages.

1) Recently finished ‘పతంజలి భాష్యం’.by KNY Patanjali.

This book is a Revised(?)PUBlication brought after his death in 2009
(by PERSPECTIVES,Hyd)

Most of the columns are on contemporary politics (and society)
of 80’s to 2009.
The short columns (56 in 160 Pages) are almost like a running commentary.
And makes it a easy read even for those not interested in politics.

” ఊరి మొత్తానికి ఒకడే రౌడి వుండాల.వాడు గవర్నమెంటోడే కావల. ” – kind of comments are stingy and at times make you wonder if the author is a retired naxalite with the fire intact, but without using their language.or pure satire coated with acid vented out of despair.

At least in contemporary journalism i guess this is one of the best satirical work.

Besides the essays, the author’s take on his background
(Career, reading, why&how of writing) is interesting.

A must read both for the columns and for the author’s –
“I write to please the worlds with in me”

2) Book on Balagopal – a collection of various articles from the media that appeared after BG’s death.( Included some old articles as well.Eg:Patanjali’s ’85)

For those who know of BG’s work this book doesn’t appeal.But for others this is good intro. But would have served better with good editing.

3) ‘రాష్ట్ర రాజకీయ చరిత్ర:వందేళ్ళ విశ్లేషణ 1910-2010 ‘ is a telugu version of the English book.by N.Innaiah .( of హేతువాద సంఘం , MN Roy etc)

It is an ambitious effort to cover 100 years in a 400 page book.
Gives a cursory glance at the first fifty years.
and covers more on 1960onwards.

Being a journalist doesn’t give out much in terms of analysis.
More as recap of the era.

P.S: While reading another book now on Lohia and it just occurred to me that he, Bala Gopal and Patanjali have some similarities/characteristics.
or My mixed up reading gave some…!!??

(Incidentally all of them died relatively young in the prime of their lives.)
