SEEDS  OF  BLACK  SOIL

(A Telugu Novel)

By CHANDRALATA

CHAPTER – 1

“Ah! Poor me, what can I do –

How can I save the crop

With the clouds so dark

With the soil so bubbling –

White millet sown

In black cotton soil…”

Latchumamma had been singing to herself sitting in sunshine, chewing an areca nut alternating it from one cheek to the other of her toothless mouth. At the sight of some people approaching, she had narrowed her eyes and mumbled to her self, “Who could they be…? Supporting her waist with the right hand and holding the left one as a shield to the sunlight, she walked upto them.

“Avva! Is Balaiah mama at home?” one of them said. She sized them up from top to toe in silence. One of the faces seemed to be rather familiar… but who could be the other one…?

Tall and well built , in Khadi dhoti and lalchie, an upper cloth well folded and placed neatly on the right shoulder; short hair cut; and a smile on the face…She became very curious.

What could it be that brought him here? What had he come for at this time of the day into a large house bristling with the young and the old, flourishing with children and cattle?

“No…No. Balaiah is not at home, how would my son be home now? He has gone to the field”. Having said it emphatically, she regretted the blurt, after all.

“Look! Avva!! Isn’t that upper cloth on the pial Balaiah mama’s? Just find out… if he is in, by any chance,” said the first person taking liberty.

“See!  Avva has started chatting with somebody already…!” Balaiah had shown up coming from the terrace. Thus Avva’s trial to hide him thus had been of no avail. He went on with welcoming hands to the second person.

“Come, please sit down. Dastagiri! You come and sit here”. He made them sit on the blanket that was spread over the pial.

Now that there seemed to be no reason to worry, latchumamma had gone back to where she was sitting.

“Let it be, Avva! Won’t you please continue the song?”

Happy that they had liked her song, she picked up

“What can I do –

How can I save the crop

With white millets sown-

In black cotton soil!

Just as they have sprouted,

A monkey came and plucked some.

Angry as I am with the monkey

A squirrel in full speed came and

Plucked some more.

While Ramanatham was bemused, she continued the song more vigorously.

“Angry as I am with this squirrel

A big pig rolling like a ball came and

Plucked some more.”

Meanwhile, Balaiah came from out of the house with a laugh. “Mother! Looks like you won’t let them visit us again.”

“Not at all … The song is fine. We must listen to the full song today. Mother, please go on…” Ramanatham enthused her.

Dastagiri put on a wry face. The old woman’s voice, coming from a toothless mouth was rather hoarse and ear-shattering.

Balaiah had offered them some stuffed sweet meat and savoury in a brass plate. He is a little confused and flurried in his hospitality as Narayanamma his wife was away from the house.

“Eat, children, eat. My daughter-in-law’s savouries are quite tasty” she said in a tone of appreciation.

“You have no teeth to bite and you still say they are crunchy!”  Dastagiri  started teasing her.

“An old woman tastes with the nose, my son” she laughed.

At the request of Ramanatham once more, she started the song in full throated ease. Gigling, she started moving her hands. Her dangling ear rings studded with crocodile heads were dancing as if to some background music.

“Sad as I am with the pig

A cow and a calf came and ate.

Begging or borrowing

I had some cattle

But they all had gone away before

I could clear the loan-

The Karanam and the Munsif

Come for taxes

And beat me up

For not paying.”

Oh, poor me, what can I do

How can I save the crop?”

Everyone laughed at the way she put her hands quite dramatically on her head.

Balaiah added as if in refrain – “That is how agriculture is now-a-days. It’s like grazing the goats in a leafless forest, isn’t it? Sweat and toil wasted on the village officers”.

“Yet, I tell you

Sow white millet

In black cotton soil

And reap

Sixty putties of Jowar”.

Concluding the song, she tittered once more. Dastagiri made fun of her optimism, “Avva! How ingeniously you say”

“Why not bidda! Nadakachiri is born in our Nadigadda only. Goddess of wealth Siri Latchmi enters the house of the one who holds a plough!”

Balaiah, rather vexed with her said, “we will lose track of time if we go on with her like this. Let’s go”.

Taking leave of her, Ramantham promised her to come again and listen to her songs.
