2021లో నేను చదివిన పుస్తకాలు

నేను 2021లో చదివిన ఆంగ్ల పుస్తకాల సంఖ్య మామూలు కంటే చాలా తక్కువగా ఉంది. ఈ సంవత్సరం మా స్థానిక లైబ్రరీకి బహు తక్కువసార్లు వెళ్ళాను – కరోనా జాగ్రత్తలవల్ల, ఇతర కారణాలవల్ల కూడా. వ్యసనంగా మారిన స్ట్రీమింగ్ సినిమాలు (ముఖ్యంగా మలయాళం సినిమాలు, పాత తెలుగు సినిమాలు), న్యూయార్క్ టైంస్ స్పెల్లింగ్ బీ పజిల్ చాలా సమయాన్ని తీసుకోవటం కూడా కారణాలే; దాదాపు 160 సినిమాలు చూశాం ఈ సంవత్సరంలో. ఎప్పటిలాగానే తానా నవలలపోటీ కొంత సమయాన్ని తీసుకొంది. ఐతే, ఇంగ్లీషు పుస్తకాల స్థానాన్ని తెలుగు పుస్తకాలు భర్తీ చేశాయి. తెలుగు పుస్తకాల సరఫరాకు మళ్ళీ వీలు కావటం ముఖ్య కారణం. హైదరాబాదు నవోదయా పబ్లిషర్స్ వారి సహకారంవల్ల చాలా కొత్త పుస్తకాలు త్వరగా అందాయి. మిత్రుడు చంద్ర కన్నెగంటి లైబ్రరీలో కొన్ని పుస్తకాలు దొరికాయి. మిత్రులు వారి ముద్రిత/ అముద్రిత పుస్తకాలను సహృదయంతో పిడీఎఫ్ కాపీలు పంపిస్తున్నారు.  మొత్తానికి మళ్ళీ పుస్తకపఠనం గాడిలో పడినట్లే ఉంది.

మిత్రులు శ్రీశ్రీ ప్రింటర్స్ విశ్వేశ్వరరావుగారు మహాప్రస్థానం కాఫీటేబుల్ ఎడిషన్ ప్రచురించినప్పుడు ఆ పుస్తకం ప్రూఫులు చూస్తూ, మహాప్రస్థానం మొత్తంగా ప్రతి పదాన్నీ, పంక్తినీ, పద్యాన్నీ మళ్లీ పనిగట్టుకుని చదివి ఆస్వాదించి ఆనందించటం ఈ సంవత్సరం పుస్తకపఠనంలో ప్రత్యేకం.

ఈ సంవత్సరం చదివిన పుస్తకాలలో అన్నింటికన్నా బాగా నచ్చిన పుస్తకాలు: ఇంగ్లీషులో Grapes of Wrath (John Steinbeck), తెలుగులో కొండకింద కొత్తూరు (మధురాంతకం నరేంద్ర). తీరిక చేసుకుని ఈ పుస్తకాల గురించి, మరికొన్నింటి గురించి వ్రాయాలి.

   Nonfiction

Maverick Messiah – A political biography of N.T. Rama Rao – Ramesh Kandula; In this well written account, Kandula spends little time on the personal biography and focuses on the rise (and fall) of NTR, the politician. Compared to most others that chronicled the NTR era, Kandula focuses particularly on the lasting impact of NTR on national politics and policies.

CheeseDosa, the Book – Aditya Surendran; The recollections of a young man of Asian-Indian origin about his growing up in the 90s in New Jersey. Mildly interesting, often amusing, read. (Aside: I came across this book – an autographed copy – at the AirBNB that we rented in Raleigh, North Carolina; apparently Aditya Surendran stayed in the same place earlier for a few days and gifted this book to the owner of the place).

   Fiction

The O’Henry Prize Short Stories (The best short stories of 2018). Received this book as part of a New Year Book/Gift Exchange program.  Good short (and some a little long) stories with a variety of themes.

Undercover Bromance – Lissa Kay Adams. A romance book about a secret club of men who like romance novels. Mildly interesting.

Hercule Poirot – The Complete Short Stories – Agatha Christie; all the short stories featuring the master detective in one place; many familiar and some quite famous. Many of the stories are still interesting and almost all of them are now dated (some are 80 plus years old). The Labors of Hercules felt like quite a stretch this time.

Citizen Tom Paine – Howard Fast. A fascinating and passionate account of Thomas Paine and the US War of Independence and its aftermath.  Paine was an important personage of American Revolution, whose pamphlets inspired the masses and propelled the revolution. He was a penniless immigrant from England; besides his role in the revolution, he was also known for his later efforts on behalf of the common man in both England and post-revolution France.

Freedom Road – Howard Fast. This is Fast’s rendering of the events in the South during the reconstruction (the period after the Civil War and emancipation of slaves) and after. Fast’s protagonist is the fictional Gideon Jackson, an illiterate, newly freed slave, elected by his neighbors to sit in the constitutional convention of South Carolina. Jackson educates himself during the process both in the literal and the larger sense and eventually becomes a Congressman. There is a remarkable cooperation between poor white and black people resulting in a remarkable constitution treating people equally under law. However, the brief period of equality under law and the prosperity of the newly free slaves is eventually obliterated by the powerful and vengeful white supremacists and a federal government that returned the power to the former plantation owners. I remember reading a Telugu translation of this novel (స్వేచ్ఛాపథం) when I was in high school more than 50 years ago and being very impressed; I am even more impressed now. Fast presents the historical events in a highly personal way. In the 70s, I remember reading that Mohammad Ali was going to play the lead in a movie version.  I recommend the book highly.

Moses – Howard Fast. This is the story of young Moses growing up in Egypt as a prince and heir to Ramses and eventually realizing the truth about his own origin and his obligation to his oppressed ancestors. For me, this is one of the poorer works of Fast, mostly because he is spinning a tale out of whole cloth, without much of actual historical basis. Felt it meandered quite a bit.

Spartacus – Howard Fast. I first read this shortly before I joined medical college; had this paperback with me in my hostel room and read it several times in those days; have not gone back to it in many years; saw the film a couple of times since then. I am now very impressed by the way Fast tells this tale. He builds up the legend of Spartacus, through what others saw and their interactions with him. The book actually begins after the death of Spartacus and the end of the slave rebellion. We learn of him through his main adversary that finally defeated him in the battle, a Roman senator, the woman he loved and other people in his life, in a non-linear narration. Obviously, one of the best (and most known) works of Fast. There was an old Telugu translation in circulation during my college days, and I understand that there are a couple of more recent translations available.

My Italian Bulldozer – Alexander McCall Smith.  A romance set in Italian countryside. Not particularly impressive.

Gold Diggers -Sanjana Sethian; Indian American Teenagers get into stealing gold to make a magical gold lemonade that gives them the qualities of the owners of the gold. Interesting for some insights into the travails of these teenagers, but a bit stretched.

The Grapes of Wrath – John Steinbeck. Another book that I got through the New Year Book/Gift Exchange program (Thank you Anil Rayal) and by far my best read in 2021. A masterclass in writing. Very interesting plot, characters and circumstances. Great narrative skills. And, technically brilliant. Continues to be relevant and resonant for current times. The book won the National Book Award as well as the Pulitzer Prize for fiction. Steinbeck eventually won the Nobel Prize for literature.

Rivera Gold – Laurie R King. Interesting mystery set in the past in Monaco featuring Mary Russell, the wife of Sherlock Holmes and Holmes himself.

Take a Hint, Dani Brown – Talia Hibbert. A fun romance. Apparently, this is part of a trilogy about three sisters. I would like to read the other two.
