2020లో నేను చదివిన పుస్తకాలు

2020 విలక్షణమైన సంవత్సరం అని నేను మళ్ళీ చెప్పవలసిన పని లేదు; దానికి కారణాలు మళ్ళీ చెప్పనూ అక్కర్లేదు. చాలా ప్రయాణాలు చేయాలని ప్రణాళికలు వేసుకుని చివరకు ఒక్క ప్రయాణమూ చేయలేదు. మార్చ్ మూడోవారం నుండి ఇంటి ఆవరణ దాటి బయటకు వచ్చింది కూడా తక్కువే. మరి తీరిక పెరిగింది కదా, చదువుకోవటానికి ఎక్కువ సమయం దొరికి ఉంటుంది, చదివిన పుస్తకాల సంఖ్య బాగా పెరిగి ఉంటుంది అనుకుంటే పప్పులో కాలు వేసినట్లే. ఇంతకుముందెప్పుడో పార్కిన్సన్ మహాశయుడు చెప్పినట్టు తీరిక పెరిగినకొద్దీ ఆ సమయాన్ని నింపే వ్యాపకాలూ పెరిగాయి – మళయాళం సినిమాలు,  ఫేస్బుక్లో సినిమా జ్ఞాపకాలు, ఇంటర్నెట్ చదరంగం, న్యూయార్క్ టైంస్ స్పెల్లింగ్ బీ, కెన్‌కెన్ పజిల్సూ లాంటివన్నమాట. వీటన్నిటికన్నా ముఖ్యమయింది – కోవిడ్19 వైరస్ గురించి సమాచారం సేకరించటం, పంచుకోవటం చాలా సమయం తీసుకొంది. లైబ్రరీల మూసివేత వల్ల ఆంగ్లపుస్తక పఠనం బాగా తగ్గిపోయింది.  మధ్యలో ఆగస్ట్ లో వాటర్‌లీక్‌వల్ల రెండు బీరువాల పుస్తకాలు తడిసిపోవటమనే విషాదమొకటి. 2020 మార్చ్ నుంచి పుస్తకాలు చదవటం బాగా మందగించింది (అక్టోబర్ నెల తప్పించి). ఈ మందగింపు మూడువారాల క్రిందటి వరకూ కొనసాగింది. బండి మళ్ళీ ఇప్పుడే కదులుతున్నట్లుంది.

The Invention of Yesterday : A 50,000 year History of Human Culture, Conflict and Connection – Tamim Ansary; The book looks at how different societies evolved simultaneously with different languages, beliefs and religions. The two premises are that history is shaped by  environment, tools and language (communication / overwhelming narrative), and that events in one part of the world have significant influence on other parts of the world (Chinese building the great wall caused the invasion of the Western Asia by the nomadic tribes). Very interesting book. For some reason, took me three months to read it.

One Day – The Extraordinary Story of an Ordinary 24 hours in America – Gene Weingarten. Veteran journalist Gene Weingarten had strangers pick a day from the past. That day, chosen at random, was December 28, 1986 – a Sunday during the Holiday season, generally considered a dull news day.  Weingarten looked at what happened across America on that single day, and found some very interesting human stories. For example, the first story is about a patient receiving a heart transplant – the donor heart was from a young man who killed his wife and then himself; then there is the related story about how that particular hospital in a small city came to have a heart-transplant program. These stories across America during one day span a wide range of topics of interest, and are made even more interesting by good writing.

Viriah – Krishna Gubbili: This is the story of author’s grandfather who went from Korlapadu (Krishna Dt?) to Natal, South Africa, as an indentured coolie on a sugarcane farm, and the author’s search to find information about his grandfather and his long lost relatives. A sort of Roots without the emotional intensity; still, a good account of a forgotten part of history. Viriah was one of thousands of such indentured laborers that supported the sugarcane industry. A Telugu translation is now available from Anveeshiki.

Ants Among Elephants – Sujatha Gidla:  The author is Sivasagar’s (Satyamurthy) niece. This is the story of her mother and her uncle and a little bit about herself. Some interesting details about the early days of Naxal movement in Andhra Pradesh; was a little difficult to read in the beginning. Took a long time for me to finish this book.

The Residence: Inside the Private World of the White House – Kale Anderson Brower: An inside story of how the first families live in the White House with anecdotal portraits of the first families thru the eyes of the people standing by them – the white house residential staff.

My Way – ML Jaisimha: The life story of a favorite cricketer from distant past known for his style and also substance (‘Jai rattles Windward Islands’ is a headline in Indian Express that I remember from India’s 1971 West Indies tour)

The Obesity Code – Jason Fung: Dr. Fung expands on a theory of preventing obesity and diabetes thru intermittent fasting.

   Fiction

Strange Library – Haruko Murakami: A long story in the magical realism genre; the most interesting part for me was the book design.  

The Drought – John Creasey: On April 1, 1972, the results of the medical entrance examination were published; I was in Tenali when I saw the result and went to our home in Intooru to share the news of my success with my parents. Learned that they went to Kuchipudi, a nearby village, for a wedding. I went to the wedding and while waiting for my parents, started talking with another guest there; he was in the Indian Navy. He had this book with him. I started reading it and was about half way through it by the time my parents arrived at the venue. I returned the book, confident that I will find a copy later. I have been searching for this book for 48 years. During a conversation in Facebook, a friend found it on Amazon. Got to finish the book finally. The book has an interesting premise, but the ending did not live up to the beginning.

Blue Moon – Lee Child; a Jack Reacher novel; Easy to read; Started out well; not as good as it progressed.

Guns of Navarone – Alistair Maclean: A classic Maclean that became a classic movie; nostalgic.

Bear Island – Alistair Maclean: Rather ponderous without much of a suspense.

The Lonely Sea – Alistair Maclean: Collection of naval stories, many having to do with WWII; some poignant stories.

Alistair MacLean’s UNACO – Death Train – Alistair MacNeill; an attempt to cash in on the MacLean name in the spy genre; OK, but not good

Man’s 4th Best Hospital – Samuel Shem (pen name of Dr. Joseph Bergman); a sequel to mostly House of God with occasional references to Mount Misery; A satire regarding the corporatization of medicine and the EMR with a plea for more humanity in medicine and universal healthcare. Was difficult to read the early parts, better later, but still a drag because of its uneven writing and a lot of detours.

The Queen’s Gambit – Walter Tevis; the Netflix movie got me interested in the author, who I discovered wrote two of my other favorite movies – The Hustler and The Color of Money.

The Hustler – Walter Tevis; About a pool hall hustler with great talent that learns about character after a huge fall; made into a classic movie with Paul Newman, Jackie  Gleason, and George C. Scott.

The Color of Money – Walter Tevis; a sequel to the Hustler
