Invisibles: David Zweig

అవ్వడానికి ఇది “the power of anonymous work” అనేదాని గురించే అయినా, “in an age of relentless self-promotion” అనేది ఇక్కడ కీలకం.

ఒకప్పటి Culture of Character  నుండి Culture of Personality నుండి, ఇప్పుడు ప్రస్తుతం Culture of Profile నడుస్తుందని రచయిత అభిప్రాయం.

In the Internet Age we are now all being watched and watching one another. “Before, we had the classic panopticon, in which many are observed by the few,” wrote Rob Horning in a 6,500-word treatise on fame, technology, and surveillance in the modern era in The New Inquiry, a journal of cultural criticism. This scenario recalls Orwell’s Big Brother and infamous state security services like East Germany’s Stasi. “If you invert this,” Horning continued, “you have sousveillance, the few observed by the many,” the model of traditional fame, where “the masses gossip about a handful of stars.

Today, however, “the ubiquity of social media . . . brings about lateral surveillance or ‘participatory surveillance,’ the many observing the many.” Operating in this environment, where you observe others and know they are observing you, on a mass scale, deeply alters our sense of public and private, normalizing the expectation of recognition for everything you do.

In physical space, and to a lesser extent talking on phone, there is no time to edit what we are saying in a conversation. Yet much of how we interact online is not in “real time.” This both enables and burdens us with the ability to edit what we say and how we present ourselves. More time is spent on crafting the image of oneself and less time on spontaneous interaction.

While pausing to think and craft a narrative produces possibly our most complex thoughts—like books—it also, when directed toward presenting oneself, forces an exaggerated self-awareness.

“…receiving outward credit for your work is overrated.”

Ask yourself: Do I want to be on a treadmill of competition with others, or do I want to find lasting reward by challenging myself?
