రష్యాలో 1920 లో జన్మించి, తల్లిదండ్రులతో పాటు మూడేళ్లప్పుడు అమెరికాకి వలస వెళ్లి అక్కడే చదివి, ప్రొఫెసర్ గా పనిచేసి ఇంకా గొప్ప రచయిత, సైంటిఫిక్‌ ఫిక్షన్ పితామహుడిగా పేర్గాంచినవాడు, 500 పైగా పుస్తకాలు వ్రాసిన వాడు అసిమోవ్. ఇతని ఆత్మకథల్లో మూడోది చివరది ఈ I.ASIMOV పుస్తకం.
ఈ పుస్తకం చదవదగ్గది, రచయిత కావాలి అనుకునే వారు తప్పనిసరిగా చదవదగ్గ పుస్తకం. బాల్యం నుండి వృద్దాప్యం వరకు వివిధ సంఘటనలు, సంస్థలు, వ్యక్తులు, విషయాల గురించి అసిమోవ్ అధ్యాయాల వారీగా వ్రాశాడు.

• Well Saying so doesn’t make it so, and if I had truly wanted to compete, truly felt that I had to get higher marks, I would have swotted away – but I refused. I decided I didn’t have to because I needed no record marks to prove to myself that I was remarkable. My enjoyment in being me wasn’t affected. After all, I wasn’t just a student; I was a writer.

It does raise the question, though, as to whether alcoholism is an occupational hazard for writers. I have heard this seriously suggested and I think I can understand why it might be. Writing is a lonely job. Even if a writer socializes regularly, when he gets down to the real business of his life, it is he and his typewriter or word processor. No one else is or can be involved in the matter.

What’s more, a writer is notoriously insecure. Is he turning out pure junk? Even if he is popular writer who is sure of publishing whatever he writes, he might still worry about quality. It seems to me that the combination of loneliness and insecurity (plus, in some cases the inexorable pull of the deadline) makes it all too easy to seek the solace of liquor. And certainly, I know many science fiction writers who are heavy drinkers.

శృంగారం గురించి –

As the time went on, I did, of course, learn about the nature of sex. This was not from my parents, you understand. My father and mother would not have dreamed of discussion sex with me. (or I suspect , though I may be wronging them, even with each other). And I, for my part, would not have dreamed of approaching them with questions on the subject. ; Nor did I lean about sex from my reasoned source of instruction. I learned about it from the distorted and imperfect knowledge of other boys. This is the usual fate enforced upon youngsters by a society that is too prim and too hypocritical to have sex taught like any other branch of knowledge.

సైన్స్ పుస్తకాల గురించి –

One problem with a book that deals with contemporary science is that in a very few years it becomes ludicrously out of date. And the pressure to prepare a new edition starts rising.

పాలస్తీనా – ఇజ్రాయేలు దేశం గురించి –

I was right, especially when it soon turned out that the Arabs were sitting on most of the world’s oil supply, so that the nations of the world, being pro-oil of necessity, found it politic to become pro-Arab. (Had this matter of oil reserves been known earlier, I’m convinced that Israel would not have been established in the first place.)

అమెరికాలో అనమెరికనుడు అని ఎందుకు చెప్పుకున్నాడంటే
1.    సగటు అమెరికన్ లా కాకుండా డబ్బులు ఎక్కువగా ఖర్చు పెట్టడు.
2.    టెక్ సేవీ కాదు, క్యాలుక్యులేటర్ కూడా కొనలేదు. ఐబియం ఎలక్ట్రానిక్ టైప్ రైటర్ ఓ దశాబ్దం, వర్డ్ ప్రొసెసర్ తన తరువాత జీవితం అంతా వాడాడు.
3.    ప్రయాణాలు ఇష్టం ఉండదు, తక్కువ దేశాలు తిరిగాడు, తక్కువ ఊళ్లు తిరిగాడు.
4.    హాలీవుడ్ వ్యామోహంలో చిక్కుకోకుండా జీవితాంతం దూరంగానే ఉన్నాడు.
