Canton Public Library

Thanking Laurie Golden and Lisa Davis-Craig for their co-operation and almost instant response!

Canton Public Library

How was this international languages series formed? Is this a characteristic of the public library system in the US? (We are from India, and don’t know much about your library system)

For many years our library, and many others in the South-Eastern Michigan area, relied on the International Book Collection of the Detroit Public Library. (Detroit being the major city in our area, they maintained an international collection from which they sent titles on a bi-annual rotation.) In 2002, I believe, the Detroit Public Library decided they could no longer maintain this program. Many libraries in the area then decided to collect international language materials on their own. I would say that quite a few medium sized and large public libraries have international collections, although I have no statistics to back me up. I am part of a group of Michigan librarians who meet bi-annually to discuss international book collection and that group represents many libraries.

On what basis did you make this choice of languages? Did you consider the representation of people of those languages in this region during this process?

In 2003, when we no longer had the Detroit Public Library collection, we instigated a survey (online and via paper) to ask our patrons what languages, books, and authors they wished to see in the collection. We got a tremendous response from this survey, and used it and the check-out statistics from the old Detroit Public Library collection to make our choices in purchasing. We continue to take suggestions both written and online, as well as examining U.S. Census data for our area. We started in 2003 with only 9 languages: Bengali, Chinese, Gujarati, Hindi, Korean, Panjabi, Tamil, Urdu, and Vietnamese.

Reg.Telugu, how was the list made? Who assisted your library for it?

Especially when a specific language collection is new, we get many requests from our patrons for authors and titles. We use patron requests as well as our check-out statistics, and then an order is compiled for D.K. Agencies, the book distributor in India we use for all Indian languages except Kannada.

Is there a telugu reader base?

Yes, Telugu is a popular language in our library.

How did the Telugus in this area respond to this initiative?

Based on check-out statistics, I would say quite well. I also get feedback on aspects that people like and don’t like about the collection.

When did this begin and who is responsible for choosing specific books?

Telugu was added to the collection in 2004. I compile the order for D.K. Agencies.

Are new books being added to these international language databases?

We are regularly adding books to the collection. I generally put in and receive one (fairly large) Telugu order per year.

We have read about your book club meetings. Any language specific book club gatherings?

Not at this time.

Do you do stuff like engaging children in doing wordgames, puzzles etc, to encourage reading habits in them?

We have many children’s programs which offer reading and activities.

Do you plan to add more languages in future?

We are always open to that, but first we would need to hear enough interest from patrons.
